A Fine Charles II Olive Oyster Chest of Drawers, Circa 1680. England

The cross-grain ovolo moulded top is veneered in well-chosen olive oysters laid in geometric patterns incorporating a large central floral motif, roundels, corner arc quadrants and a trefoil to each end, all outlined in holly stringing and set with bookmatched oysters.

Similarly, the banded sides are veneered in oysters and holly inlaid to the center with quatrefoil motifs set within a large roundel of oysters banded in holly.

Divided by cross-grain D-mouldings, the two short over three long oak-lined crossbanded graduating drawers are decorated with book-matched olive oysters. Raised on solid ash bun feet.

This remarkable chest is likely to be symbolic, depicting a large floral motif and trefoils to the top and quatrefoils to the sides, this, possibly represents creation, the holly trinity and good fortune.

The chest is incredibly well proportioned, visually beautiful and of very good colour and patination.

Masterpiece Preview - A fitting time to share a preview of our 17th century floral marquetry and olive oyster table with firm attribution to the royally appointed, Gerrit Jensen.

Gerrit Jensen was one of the foremost cabinet-makers of his day and worked in London from his premises in St. Martin’s Lane. Jensen served the English crown since the reign of Charles II as the accounts of the Royal Household record a payment to him in 1680, for furniture which King Charles II commissioned as a royal gift for the King of Morocco. In 1689, Jensen was appointed royal cabinetmaker to King William III and Queen Mary – ‘Cabinet maker in Ordinary’ to the Crown; and he retained his royal appointment throughout the reign of Queen Anne, supplying furniture for St. James’s Palace, Hampton Court and Kensington Palace. In addition to the Royal family and the Dukes of Devonshire, Jensen also attracted commissions from senior members of the nobility, including the Dukes of Richmond, Hamilton, Montagu and Somerset, collaborating with other leading artists and craftsmen on the decoration of some of the greatest town and country houses in England. Jensen was one of several artist-craftsmen of foreign background employed at the English court, and his work shows a strong Continental influence, reflecting the fashionable French court styles of Pierre Golle, André Charles Boulle and Daniel Marot earning him the title ‘the English Boulle’.

A Fine William and Mary Kingwood/Princes oyster strongbox or Coffre Fort, circa 1680-1700.

The box is adorned with highly decorative gilt-brass strapwork and decorated entirely in knife cut oysters of kingwood.

This box is fit for the most discerning of collector.

The large gilt brass shield-shaped clasp opens on a push-spring release to reveal a box interior lined in rosewood.

Once the lid is opened you can reach inside to slide the original gilt brass bolt lock to open the fall. Once the fall is open you will find two drawers lined in walnut divided by a secret compartment.

The box appears decorative, but it was also very difficult to break open or steal. It has a strong lock to the centre and two bolts concealed in the sides, so that it could be screwed down into floorboards if necessary or that of a horse-drawn carriage. Strong-boxes veneered in oysters of Princewood such as this were luxury objects.

For me, this compact and most unusual George II ‘dummy’ fronted mahogany architects bachelors chest is one of the most charming and intriguing pieces I have discovered this year…. It is noteworthy of illustration and to my knowledge, unique.

Great lengths have been installed to ensure the facade passes as a fully functioning chest. Each ‘drawer’ is vennered in figured mahogany, cock-beaded and fitted with the original open fret gilt brass handles and escutcheons, divided by cross-grain drawers rails with ovolo or ‘caddy’ moulded stiles.
Each end is fitted with a single oak lined cock-beaded drawer above a raised and fielded cock-beaded cupboard, each concealing two shaped adjustable oak folio slides.
The chest is of the most wonderful colour with well-patinated and original surfaces throughout.
