Broad Canvas traveled to London yesterday to support two of our loyal customers who have exhibitions in the capital. Unfortunate timing meant we missed a third show featuring another Oxford artist by just one day, sorry Lucy Stopford. The Osborne Studio Gallery is a charming boutique place in one of Knightsbridge’s most picturesque streets. It has a legacy of displaying mostly equine art and so it is exciting that they are supporting Marcus Hodge as his work takes unexpected twists and turns. Well known for classic portraiture, Marcus has also become renowned for his stunning horses, his vigorous brush strokes capturing their movement and vitality. Recently, his work has taken a new direction, into abstraction, with canvases slathered with the thickest, juiciest slaps of oil paint. I asked my guest to stop me if I couldn’t resist sticking my fingers into the glossy surfaces. Luckily, it didn’t come to that and we were allowed to stay. ‘Marcus Hodge: Gateway to Abstraction’ runs until 27th July. We also saw Claire Venables’ charming, pastel-hued and ever so slightly quirky paintings at the NEAC show in the prestigious Mall Galleries, along with visits to The National and The National Portrait Galleries. Having decided not to use the tube and discover the finer parts of London by foot, after 22,940 steps (roughly 17km), this Oxford art pilgrimage was a workout for the feet and the brain. Well worth it though.

On this special day in the calendar, who cares about the weather forecast? Rain just creates more rainbows, or ‘watercolours’ as we like to call them. We hope that EVERYONE feels the warm and inclusive atmosphere we’ve created for our customers, colleagues and friends in Broad Canvas and we wish you all a very happy Oxford Pride 2026.

Our June window display is shared with Pride (of which more tomorrow) and ‘Colour Me In Oxford!’, the popular Oxford themed colouring book. Written and illustrated over two years by local illustrator Peter Bellingham, the 24 images show four young friends having fun discovering the city. There’s also a fun rhyme to read on each page. Peter, who also works here at Broad Canvas, has proudly signed copies travelling to Japan, Malaysia, Australia, mainland Europe and cities across the U.S. He’ll be happy to sign one for you if he’s working when you visit. https://www.broad-canvas.com/colour-me-in-oxford-an-oxford-colouring-book-by-peter-bellingham/1080

What's on this Bank Holiday weekend? It's your last chance to take in a few Artweeks venues on a leisurely stroll through sunny Oxford. We have brochures and flyers to guide you through whichever area you choose and while you're here, you can see our Artweeks exhibition upstairs in The Little Gallery (359). Personally, we've visited Magdalen Road Studios (483), Rose Arbuthnott (370), Jane Kelly (487) and Caper Bookshop (484-486) and hope to see a few shows in the Jericho area. Let us know which venues you recommend or if you have some of your own artwork on show.

The Little Gallery exhibition for May is by Ian Wingate Jones. His collection of landscape paintings reflect a late-found passion for art and also the peace and beauty of the British countryside. After a career in management, Ian began painting at the age of 70. Over a period of ten years, with tutoring by renowned local artist Kieran Stiles, Ian has developed his own style which allows him to share his love of nature with others. This exhibition is in aid of UCL’s research into Huntingdon’s disease and runs until 25th May.

What’s On This Weekend?
Spring is here at last and with the weekend looming, you can either choose to enjoy the great outdoors or visit a gallery and discover art inspired by nature. A new exhibition opens today at Magdalen Road Studios. ‘Entwined’ celebrates plants and flowers and is a multimedia event by more than twenty artists. In a similar vein, the Ashmolean’s ‘In Bloom’ show explores our changing relationship with the natural world. Also in the Ashmolean’s Gallery 8 is Bangladeshi artist Soma Surovi Jannat’s CLIMATE CULTURE CARE show which reflects on the interconnectedness of nature and humanity. Upstairs here at Broad Canvas, Laura Dagenhardt’s exhibition enters its final week in The Little Gallery. Her charming oil painted landscapes have been enchanting visitors throughout April. Smell the flowers. Hug a tree. Get inspired this weekend.
