Seven hundred years ago, someone at Cosmeston broke a cooking pot and threw it away.
That ordinary piece of rubbish survived long enough to tell archaeologists what people ate, where they traded and how they lived in a small medieval village near Penarth.
Thousands of fragments helped bring the lost settlement back.

There is a walk near Penarth where you can cross 200 million years in less than an hour.
Jurassic cliffs below. Two islands on the horizon. A Welsh dinosaur in the rocks. A medieval church. And the exact place where radio first crossed open water.

A Penarth to Lavernock walk along the Wales Coast Path: the Penarth Clifftop Walk, sea views towards Flat Holm and Steep Holm, Jurassic cliffs and a Welsh dinosaur, Lavernock Battery, a tiny church, and the spot where Marconi's first radio message crossed open water in 1897.

What should you bring to an outdoor sketching meetup?
The short answer: much less than you think. A sketchbook, one pencil or pen, a warm layer, and perhaps something to sit on are enough for your first time.
I wrote a practical guide about simple materials, coloured pencils, watercolour, unpredictable Welsh weather, café backup plans — and why your socks may be more important than your paints.
And you do not even have to draw — you are still welcome to join us at Espresso Sketches Penarth.

Victoria Square is one of my favourite little green corners in the middle of Penarth. We often meet there for sketching sessions, so I thought it would be nice to learn a bit more about its history.

I ended up putting together a short article with a few old photographs, some local history, and the story of how the church was affected during the war.

I hope you enjoy it, and let me know what you think 😊
