A cathedral nave asks more of a Candle Tube than a domestic sitting room does.

Our Regency Nylon Candle Tube range was developed around that scale: it serves churches and cathedrals as well as domestic fittings, with diameters from 45 mm and heights up to 500 mm, so a tall chandelier carries a tube with the proportions the architecture expects.

A Candle Tube on a shaded table lamp is only partly seen. The shade covers the top of it, so the visible length below the rim is the part that carries the design, and the part the eye judges against the base and the shade's proportions.

For a replacement on a table lamp, floor lamp or shaded wall light, the specification is best taken from the exposed section rather than the whole tube. Note where the shade's lower rim sits in relation to the lampholder, how much of the Candle Tube remains visible beneath it, and how that exposed length reads with the base and the shade's own proportions. A taller tube that is mostly hidden changes very little visually, while one that sits too short leaves the lampholder showing below the shade.

For interior designers, restorers and homeowners renewing a shaded fitting, it helps to agree the visible length as part of the brief, with the intended LED bulb, lampholder and shade in place before the order is placed. This is specification guidance, not a compatibility guarantee.

A high chandelier that can only be reached by scaffolding is rarely cleaned. A fitting that can be lowered can be cleaned, inspected and relamped with access to each arm: making it easier to check Candle Tubes and Candles closely, including sleeve profile, finish and part references.

For wholesalers, hospitality and heritage venues, lighting manufacturers and restoration contractors, decide at specification stage whether the fixture will be maintained from above or lowered.

The Chandelier Hoist / Light-Lift range offers capacities from 20 kg to 250 kg and lowering heights of 5 m, 6 m or 10 m, depending on the unit. Units are specified for 110–240 V supply. Check the fitting’s weight and required capacity against the unit, allowing appropriate headroom; don’t size by chandelier dimensions alone. Compare the required lowering height with the actual ceiling void, and consider compact-capacity units or larger housings for the project.

Hoists must be specified and installed by a competent person. Check the required capacity against the fitting.

A Candle Tube is a small detail with a visible role in catalogue photography. Differences in finish or profile can stand out in a carefully styled lighting image, and make later additions harder to present consistently.

The lamp you see through a Candle Tube is part of the design.

Candle, flame-tip, golfball and filament-style lamps each create a different visible silhouette. A translucent Candle Tube can reveal more of the lamp's shape, while an opaque material gives a more concealed appearance. The final look comes from considering the lamp and tube profiles together.

A bulk quote is a snapshot, not a contract.

Four things legitimately move a price:
• Specification revision: fitting type, internal bore, height, seating face or finish changes.
• Quantity band change: bespoke Candle Tubes are made to order.
• Finish change: plain to dripped, waxed or specified metallic.
• Proposed material substitution: Card to Nylon or Metal.

The seating-point field causes most quote errors: whether the Candle Tube sits on the fixture arm, bobeche, candle cup or lampholder shoulder. Agree it at enquiry stage with fitting type (E10, E14 or E12-UL for specified USA applications), internal bore, overall height and finish.

A finish sample can look quite different once the lamp is switched on.

In Penny’s Daily Blog Series, we explore why the same Candle Tube finish may appear different under warm 2700K LED light compared with cool 4000K or daylight lamps. A sample chosen in showroom daylight may read differently at the fitting once installed.

Before committing to a full scheme, assess finish and material samples at the fitting’s installed position and height, both lit and unlit, using the actual light source and lamp colour temperature intended for the space. Test one sample in situ first, then agree the finish under working conditions.

Renovation can leave a period chandelier’s Candles and Candle Tubes packed away for weeks or months. A little care when storing them can make reinstatement more straightforward.

Keep each fitting’s components together, separate from general site materials, and label each part with its fitting and position. Wrap Glass components individually and store them apart from heavier Card or Metal parts. Keep everything away from dust, plaster dust and paint overspray. Support Candle Tubes without resting their rims or bases on hard surfaces, where pressure may cause chipping.

Keep original parts, even worn ones: they can provide useful dimensional references for bespoke replacements. When an original Candle Tube is lost, broken or missing entirely, a bespoke replacement can still be reached, even when nothing survives to measure.

Where a measured original exists, it can be sent to our Corby, Northamptonshire workshop and our Digital Measurement service can record its dimensions. Where no part survives, photographs and drawings may still inform a specification: a straight-on profile shot in even daylight, a scale reference such as a tape measure or ruler placed beside the fitting, views of the top and base, and any surviving twin or matching component elsewhere in the scheme all help. Period catalogue images and archive photographs can support the research too.

Photographic evidence is best treated as a starting point rather than a guarantee: proportions read differently through a camera lens, and final dimensions are confirmed against the fitting. Wherever possible, a surviving original, a twin from another fitting or a physical reference remains the strongest basis for made-to-order manufacture.
