Wee Rant Incoming!

I’m not much of a consumer, as you know I’m all about second hand, recycled and re-purposing.

But last week, I treated myself to purchases of handcrafted paints and art work.

However, upon opening both was extremely disappointed to discover that neither had left a thank you.

Shoved in a box with nae as much as wee scribble on the receipt.

I was taught that please and thank you cost nothing. Also appreciate that one doesn’t have say, it’s a choice.

But you only get one opportunity to make a first impression. If yer too busy for a common courtesy, then that tells me all I need to know.

So when someone buys from Foggy Bummers, I go the full biffta!

I love gift wrapping my sales, because there’s nothing better than opening up a pleasant surprise.

I’m more than happy to let my customers know just how much I value them. Aye, I’ve made my money so it’s not necessary. But the thought costs me little.

Not only does this makes good business sense, but in any context, a thank you is it’s own currency.

Sadly now, no matter how much I like their stuff, I won’t purchase from them again.

For when you nail the rough sketch and don’t want to f**k it up!

Use tracing paper on top for the composition.

I use Biefang Canary Tracing Paper.

Pen or pencil glide and mistakes are easily erased, so you can rework it to yer heart’s content.

It’s also good for patch up jobs if the illustration does go t**s up!

Simply draw, tear, stick it over the top and redraw.

Plus it saves on paper, no pile of scrunched ups in the corner, especially when one is having an off day šŸ˜‚

As an illustrator, today was my first taste of rejection.

I’d submitted these five to the Kelpie Prize and received a ā€œregret to inform youā€ email today.

These were inspired by my childhood, my Granda and of our times together with him and my Grunny on holiday in oor wee Volkswagen Camper Van touring the Highlands.

Making Friends
Wild Camping
Star Gazing
Fly-Fishing and
Sight Seeing

Of course I’m disappointed and a little sad, it’s never nice to be told no without knowing the why not?

I could have kept this to myself. But it’s all too easy to only post the positives here, and I prefer to be honest.

We all have to start somewhere.

Dealing with rejection is part of the job, and as I gear myself to send more submissions, doubt it will it be my last.

However, I took the first step and am proud of myself for trying. Plus nothing haunts you like the what if?

I got my art in front of industry faces and at minimum, they know who Kirsteen at Foggy Bummers now.

My hubby’s home, so I’ll have a dram with him to commiserate the night, then dust myself off the and get back on the horse the morn.

Nae time to mope, cause there’s magic to be made šŸ–¤

I did a thing 😃

Absolutely chuffed!

With a bit of patience, using my trusty nib and ink, managed to turn my handwriting into a font for my children’s book, Tails from the Black House-The Wee Wildling.

I’d seen a reel from on how to do exactly this and decided to give it a go.

To make the magic happen, I used Calligraphr, Canva, and a YouTube tutorial to tweak it.

It feels good knowing the font is mine, adding yet another touch of heart and home to the story.

Whatcha think? šŸ–¤

Unconventional Sketch Book

Every morning, after a yawn and a stretch, and I’ve made my first cup of tea, I sketch.

It’s my wee warm up ritual before the working day and never fails to help reset.

Sharing this wee reel today because I wanted to contribute to the Helen Stephen’s sketchbook prompts

This month’s is and while mine isn’t the smallest, it is unconventional, so that kinda counts.

This is sketching without thinking. I just draw whatever catches my eye, which when one lives in the middle of a forest, is myriad.

My sketchbook of choice at the moment is a vintage diary of The Edwardian Lady’s Diary.

The pages have a coating of some kind, so the ink glides but watercolour resists.

There’s no technique, you’re just putting down paint, and this is great because it stops me overthinking.

I like that the watercolour does what it wants to do and how it dries lovely and loose on the page, and by contrast, couldn’t replicate elsewhere if I tried.

Plus it’s proof of no excuses. To sketch, all you need is paper of any kind, pen or a pencil. No expensive materials required and imagination’s free šŸ–¤

Woodnote

Summer,
Hare, hides neath’ the trees.
Earthed in clover,
Hazel amongst the green.
Bright eyes,
such magick you have seen.

Celebrating my love for the Leporine and the arrival of Summer.

Using a recycled flea market find this ink painting is a frame within a frame, one which captures beautifully the magic of these mystical familiars.

Did you know

the collective name for a gathering of hares is a husk?

This husk is a magic circle as potent as Luna herself.

The four lucky wee hares are hand painted on wood in ink and gouache. The moon itself, painted on the night of the May Full Moon.

A repurposed flea market find which in its old life, the woodblock hailed from Oban (according to the sticker) on the West Coast of Scotland.

This powerful talisman is perfect either as a wall hanging or for altar work.

Do you have something you’re proud was found in a charity shop? What’s your favourite find here, and can you guess what’s mine?

Aye, it’s STILL raining but nothing lifts the spirits more than a trip to my local Charity Barn, and finding a find.

Thirty quids worth in this case. An impressive haul by any standard.

Say it time and again, but the Womble in me is always amazed me by what folks chuck out. Those Winnie the Pooh stamps were unopened and eleven quid each.

But as the saying goes one woman’s trash is another’s treasure. Make good use of the things that I find. Things that the everyday folks leave behind.

For The Wee Wildling’s Guide to the Year, I had a specific idea for how I wanted them look, so ask and ye’ shall receive.

Excited to make a start on these wee art books and watch them come to life.

As the sun sets on the last day of 2025, it is time to gather the year around me and reflect.

Tonight, I’ll raise a glass and be it a blessing or a lesson, give thanks.

I spent the festive season alone, so used the time wisely; walking, painting, reading and writing. These last two weeks of respite has only confirmed that this platform does not serve my best interests,

and what better way to start tomorrow than doing this today.

In a bid to return to analog and old school connections I jumped at the chance when my friend Caroline asked if I was interested in being part of the collective.

Other than Caroline, I don’t know any of the women. It is from the journals, as they travel from person to person, that we will learn about each other.

I dropped off mine today, getting ahead of the cold snap. I am excited to receive and contribute to my first one in January.

The journal itself is handcrafted and cost nothing. The leaves I foraged from home and preserved in glycerin (thanks Helen) making them easy to sew with. The rest, from what I had combined with repurposed and recycled materials.

The spine is the remnants of an old dish towel, the fabric too bonny to discard. The title I stamped, using old bed sheet fabric used for eco-printing. Even the elastic bands for the signatures were free! Because our postbox is outside, the Postie leaves them on to keep our mail together, and I keep em.

So, the next part of the journey begins here, I cut the ties of the old and welcome in the new with The Sisterhood of the Traveling Journal.

Next year, I’ll pop by here from time to time when I have, like today, something worth sharing.

Whatever 2026 brings, I hope that it is all you wish for and that it be filled with fun, love, laughter, health and happiness,

death to the Patriarchy and World Peace šŸ•Šļø

Tomorrow brings the Winter Solstice and for me, the winds of change.

This year has been productive and prosperous year, with a few dreams made reality.

But I’m bone tired and honestly, sick of hustling and the mental drain of spent, empty folk. This space no longer serves the kinder kind.

Meta wants you to believe you’re nothing without them. That one can’t succeed without social media. But they are wrong.

Art has and will always exist without it, and F**K AI šŸ–•šŸ½

We are all human and comparison is the thief of joy, combined with the procrastination that comes from even minimal distraction.

Next year my entire focus will given to Tails from the Black House and in order to do so, I must give it my full attention.

The last few months in a bid to nourish real connection, made an intentional shift.

I now write letters to pen pals and email/call friends. Plus there’s the Foggy Bummers Magazine for my valued subscribers.

Thank you to all who contributed to my 2025. Your custom and kinship will carry with me.

I sit here on solstice eve with a dram in hand, and bid you farewell.

Wishing you a blessed Yule and may the coming year be kind to you and yours.

See the bells bring health and happiness.

My land is bare of chattering folk;
the clouds are low along the ridges,
and sweet’s the air with curly smoke
from all my burning bridges.
