Bloomin Heather

Bloomin Heather Farmhouse-style wood home decor and home organisation items handmade to order in Aberdeenshire. Custom order requests are welcomed.

Each wood item is hand cut, sanded and decorated and because wood is a living thing, no two items will ever be the same - this means that each piece is unique but it also means that uniformity can't always be guaranteed and pieces will always differ slightly from the picture. Please message me directly with requests or suggestions and I will try to accommodate you if at all possible.

I've been quiet on Facebook for a while... I've been expanding my personal horizons and challenging myself to do more physical things, which have taken up a little bit of my time. A friend of mine is committing to doing 21 physical challenges over the next 21 months to raise money for charity and I've agreed to accompany her on a few of them - now that the first one has been ticked off the list after participating in the 50m relay swim at the Scottish Winter Swimming Champtionships, the next one we're gearing for is the Loch Awesome 75km SUP challenge at the beginning of May. Wish me luck - I've never done anything like this before. If you're interested in following along with my friend, Lauren's 21 Challenge journey, you can do that here: 21 Sparkle Challenge

Despite how quiet I've been, my Etsy shop is still open, and I am working on orders - and I'm also planning to be adding some signs to it over the next few weeks. I'd love to hear if there are any signs that you would like to see up for sale?

In a break from the norm, here are a few pictures of my non-wood-related escapades recently.

Mission accomplished! A line from "our song" that we've long intended to have displayed above our bed and is finally a reality. The plans for this particular project started taking shape in my mind almost a year ago, but I got side-tracked making stocking holders, trays and ladders... and possibly also by a lack of confidence that I could make it happen the way I imagined. I am so glad I finally bit the bullet and did it!
It's a mammoth 22x44 inches, antique white background with dark grey lettering. The wood has been stained with my favourite Littlefairs Medium Oak wood dye and then finished with a further wrap of wood painted with Craig and Rose Copper Effect paint. It's subtle on this overcast day, but boy does it all shimmer when the sun hits it (even the wood!)

A lovely grey wash ladder in the post today... and I'm getting SO close to finishing my other project for our home! It's the biggest sign that I've ever done, and I've constructed the frame in a different way to my usual method. It's been an enjoyable process, but also a bit stressful challenging myself and hoping things work out the way I envisioned in my mind. So far, so good, though and all going well, it should be finished and ready to hang by tomorrow.

Couldn't possibly be happier about how this ended up turning out!
I've wanted a leaning "welcome" plank for a long time but kept putting the idea on the back burner. So glad I pushed myself to make it a reality - and, of course, the Highland cow had to make an appearance.
We have a really narrow porch and I knew that if I wanted to out anything else on it as a seasonal decoration etc, it would have to go in front of the plank... but I didn't want it to obscure the "Welcome" so I decided to deliberately make it too long so that it would allow space for something underneath it. Autumn porch decorating isn't QUITE finished, but its a great start for now.

After a lovely weekend with friends and family, we're straight back into the thick of things today with lots of staining and painting to keep me busy. The long board is nearly 2m long and so a bit unwieldy to move about but I'm hoping it's going to be worth it when I'm finished with it. Both it, and the framed sign are personal projects for our home that I'm hoping I'll have finished this week... in between even more ladders 😊
The "GATHER" sign was a lovely special order completed this weekend and now off to its new home...
All work being done today with the cosy aroma of my favourite Dark Honey and To***co melts in the background reminding me that autumn definitely is here!

Of all my makes, these little ladders have, by far and away, been the most ordered item! I have so much fun making them and occasionally getting to see them in your homes doing their thing. I've had a bit of a run of them since I reopened my shop after the holidays and have had done a couple of posting runs over the last few days. And with still a few more in various stages of sanding/staining/curing, I'll be visiting our little post van again this week too! So if you've had your eye on one in my Etsy shop, know that you have excellent taste and are in great company 😉

I've been a little quiet on social media recently... so much going on in the run up to the school holidays and then a bit of much deserved time off! I had closed my shop for a few weeks while we spent some time together as a family, but it's open again for business as of today.
Although I have a few items in my shop that keep me busy, (and I really want to work on adding more soon - maybe even some Christmas items 😉) I also make signs... and often take custom requests from friends and family. Here are a few that I have completed recently.

Most people got their home in order during lockdown... but with 3 girls at home all the time, our house went the complete opposite direction and I'm now trying to claw my way back. First job - trying to minimise the laundry sitting on my couch by creating a laundry station on our small upstairs landing where I can put each girls' clean laundry and they can be responsible for putting it away. The Wham baskets aren't quite a perfect fit but I chose them because I thought they would be more sturdy than the canvas cubes plus the handles on either side will make it easier for little hands to carry them to and from bedrooms. I also bought a kids t-shirt folder to help the girls fold their own clothes and have hung it on a hook I added at the side of the shelves.

I little insight into my process and why it takes as long as it does to produce each piece...
A note about "my favourite products" at the end. I forgot to add here that given my space limitations, not only do I not keep premade pieces, but I don't have a lot of space for products I use and stock that I buy. So another reason you may end up waiting is if I have to place an order for more wood dye/vinyl/glue/paint or I have to visit the lumber yard for more wood. I love the products I use enough to hold out for them to arrive before I finish your order.

After I posted the lovely pictures of my gorgeous trays on Insta a couple of months ago, I had quite a few people ask me if that was really my house. Which made me feel kind of good. The people who knew me best asked me where I was hiding all my laundry as I am infamous for "laundry couch" - 3 little girls and a husband in trade makes for a LOT of laundry.. (Spoiler alert, our couch is just so massive that my laundry was artfully concealed out of shot 😂) But today I was getting to work on a particularly heinous laundry pile and I thought perhaps I should share a "real life" post with my followers so that you can see what my couch looks like - to some degree - a fair portion of the time. But it's nice to know that my couch can go from real life to Insta-worthy every now and again 🙂
