This job was a bit of an eye opener!
Customer had a flue system and multi fuel stove installed 20years ago (Not by me).
Due to its poor set up sweeping of the flue system was nearly impossible and no chimney sweep would touch it.
After meeting this client at another job I was servicing a stove on I agreed to take a look.
On inspection I noticed the the stove had black melted tar like puddles on the top of the stove that had dried.
This being not normal and being concerned with my clients safety in using the stove I had to condemn the installation as unsafe!
The client agreed on further inspections which included opening up the front of the chimney breast.
The photo show what I had found is that cavity wall insulation had been put in to the chimney itself! The cavity wall insulation was done on a government scheme about 10 years after the stove installation.
This was being melted by the heat of the solid fuel liner and dripping on to the stove through the closure plate.
This would have given of
Dangerous fumes!
Please be aware this can happen if the cavity wall insulation is installed by someone who is incompetent in making sure this does not happen!
A heads up if you have this type of wall insulation installed.
