A little pigeon with an extraordinary story 💜🕊️

Although we only asked for red poppies for our Sea of Poppies, a few purple ones found their way to us too — and they’ve inspired a rather special addition to our Seeded window.

The fabulous Jo created this beautiful kinusaiga picture of Gustav the pigeon, now displayed alongside our purple poppies. 💜

Gustav was bred in Cosham and, on D-Day, flew 150 miles across the Channel to deliver the first news of the Normandy landings to Britain. He was awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal for his remarkable journey.

Purple poppies remember the animals affected by war — the horses, dogs, pigeons and countless others whose stories deserve to be remembered too.

Thank you, Jo, for bringing Gustav’s story to life with fabric, creativity and care. A little pigeon, a lot of love.

A little later opening for a very special reason…

Seeded will be closed this morning while we attend the opening ceremony of the Sea of Poppies at Southsea Castle. We’ll be back and opening the shop at 12:30pm today.

After so many stitches, helping hands and cups of tea, it’s time to see this wonderful community project officially opened. Thank you to every knitter, crocheter and volunteer who has helped bring it to life. ❤️

Thousands of knitted and crocheted poppies. Countless hours of making and sewing. So many people coming together to create something special.

Our Sea of Poppies at Southsea Castle is a tribute to those who served, with a little of our community’s love in every stitch.

Whether you made one poppy or hundreds, helped sew them together or lent a hand along the way—thank you. This belongs to all of us. ❤️

Teamwork makes the dream work ❤️

These photos show just how many helping hands it takes to bring our Sea of Poppies together — from securing and rolling to carrying, lifting and putting those final poppies into place.

A huge thank you to The Yardboiz and Victoria’s Festival for all your help, hard work and enthusiasm. We’re so grateful to have you as part of the team. ❤️

So many different teams have come together for this project, each bringing their own skills, time and care. Our makers, those joining everything together, the organisers and the people getting it into position — every single person has played a part.

There’s something very special about being part of a team like this. Sharing the load, working things out together and then standing back to see what we’ve all helped create.

Every poppy is an individual contribution, but look what happens when we bring them together. 🌺

Its installation day!

Poppies have made their way into our window, too ❤️

A trail of knitted and crocheted poppies has transformed this beautiful dress into our own little tribute for Remembrance. We love how each handmade flower is a little different — a reminder of all the hands and hearts behind our Sea of Poppies.

If you’re passing Seeded, take a moment to have a look. And if you’d like a poppy to wear, we have handmade poppy brooches in the shop, available for a donation to the Royal British Legion.

A little creativity, a lot of community, and time to remember. ❤️
