Choosing a radiator usually starts with style, but height matters just as much.

You don't even need to, the room's not even cold. But the radiator's back on for the first time in months, and your hand finds it anyway on the way past, just to check.

Small moment, but it's the first proper sign that autumn's arrived.

Nobody photographs the valve, but it's one of the first things you notice up close. The same shape in antique brass reads warm and traditional, while black nickel gives the exact same fitting a completely different, more modern feel.

Turn the heating on for 10 minutes today. What you feel tells you a lot.

Cold on top, warm at the bottom means there's air trapped in the system. Warm on top, cold at the bottom usually means something has settled at the base of the radiator. One radiator staying cold while the rest heat up normally points to the valve as the first suspect. And if nothing warms up at all, anywhere in the house, that's worth calling someone about now, while they've still got space in the diary.

10 minutes in September is a much smaller job than a fortnight in December, when the same problem turns into an emergency callout in the middle of a cold snap.

Sorted into Year 4. The house is quiet again.

No negotiations over breakfast, no last minute hunt for a missing shoe, no wizard hat left on the stairs for someone to trip over. Just a quiet house, a warm room, and a cup of tea that's actually still hot when you get to drink it.

Enjoy the quiet while it lasts. You've earned it.

As summer draws to a close, keep a bit of the colour indoors.

Not every room needs to go quiet for autumn. Whites and creams still do the classic, understated thing beautifully, but a brighter finish can carry a bit of that summer feeling right through into the colder months, long after the garden's stopped doing it for you.

When's the best time to replace your radiator?

Aluminium. Quick to warm, and completely recyclable at the end of its life.

Aluminium has a low thermal mass, which means it heats up fast and responds quickly whenever you turn the temperature up or down. Practical day-to-day, and a better option environmentally too once the radiator eventually reaches the end of its life.
