As summer draws to a close, keep a bit of the colour indoors.

Not every room needs to go quiet for autumn. Whites and creams still do the classic, understated thing beautifully, but a brighter finish can carry a bit of that summer feeling right through into the colder months, long after the garden's stopped doing it for you.

When's the best time to replace your radiator?

Replacing one means the heating goes off and the system comes down while it's done. In December, that's a fortnight of planning around a cold house. In August, it's a Saturday nobody even notices.

Most people only think about replacing a radiator the moment it stops working properly, which is exactly the worst time to be doing it. Getting ahead of it now means it's a choice, not an emergency.

We've put together a full guide.

The best time to replace a radiator is before you urgently need to. For a planned upgrade, spring and summer are usually the most convenient seasons. Your heating is used less frequently, there is less pressure to complete the work immediately and you have more time to find the right radiator for yo...

Aluminium. Quick to warm, and completely recyclable at the end of its life.

Aluminium has a low thermal mass, which means it heats up fast and responds quickly whenever you turn the temperature up or down. Practical day-to-day, and a better option environmentally too once the radiator eventually reaches the end of its life.

A radiator that's too small will never properly warm the room, whatever you set the thermostat to.

Go too large the other way and you end up paying to heat air nobody's using. Either way, the size is doing the wrong job.

The right size comes down to the room itself. Windows, external walls, ceiling height, doors. All of it factors in, not just how much wall space you happen to have free.

Our BTU calculator works it out for you in a couple of minutes. Free, on the site.

Royal Georgian. And it doesn't have to be white.

There's a reason the Royal Georgian radiator is still one of the most popular radiators we sell. It's traditional, it's got proper detail in the casting, and it suits almost any room.

What surprises people is how well it takes colour. A yellow, a dusty terracotta, a deep teal or a soft sage all sit just as comfortably on that same classic frame as white ever did.

You get to keep the period character of the radiator while still making the room feel like yours.

Colour is the last decision most people make when choosing a radiator. Maybe it shouldn't be.

Most of us pick the finish for a chair, a rug or a set of cushions without a second thought, then default to white or grey for the radiator. But there's no reason it has to sit apart from the rest of the room.

Match it to the right piece and suddenly it becomes part of the design rather than something you're working around. Mustard, cream, terracotta or charcoal – the colour you choose can completely change the look.

Same radiator, four completely different looks depending on what it's paired with.
