The clocks go back this weekend, and for a lot of us that means the garden goes dark by teatime.
It doesn’t have to. With the right lighting, a veranda or glass room becomes somewhere you want to be long after the sun has gone down.

Lighting comes up often when we talk to customers, so here’s what makes the biggest difference:

💡 Warm white, dimmable LEDs for a soft glow
💡 Spotlights or under-counter lights where you cook, read or sit
💡 One statement piece, like a pendant over the dining table
💡 Path, step and tree lighting to carry the glow into the garden

This Verde Eden glass room in Reading was made to measure from start to finish.

At 4.5m x 4m, with a double glazed glass roof and double glazed sliding doors, it’s a space built for using well beyond summer. A fixed aluminium and glass feature wall on the side finishes it off.

3.5m of shade at the touch of a button.

We fitted this Weinor Kubata awning in Oxford last week. When it’s closed, the fabric tucks neatly away into a slim Pure White casing above the doors. When it’s open, you get 3.5m of shade across the patio.

A veranda across the whole width of a bungalow? It can be done.

This client wanted one space that did two jobs: a glass room for morning coffees and cosy winter days, and a covered pergola for summer parties.

Two things stood in the way. A bungalow with a low roofline is typically tricky for a veranda. And the design meant joining two frames together, so the veranda ran the entire width of the property.

So we joined two Deponti Pinela verandas into one and fixed them to the bungalow wall, so a glass roof runs the full width of the property. One side stays open, the other is enclosed with glass sliding doors all round, and dimmable LED lighting finishes it all off beautifully.

A pergola over an outside bar, with a roof that opens and closes so you don’t have to second guess the weather forecast.

Steve in Exeter chose a freestanding Verde Elegance, 6m x 4m in Anthracite Grey, with a louvred roof that closes fully when the weather turns.

In his review he says: “We call it a pergola rather than a veranda as it is free standing with open sides.” And that’s the secret. Pergola, veranda or glass room, the name matters less than how you want to use the space.

Freestanding or attached to the house? Open sides or enclosed? Used every now and then, or most of the year? Those answers point you to the right structure far more reliably than the label does.

Not every veranda is straightforward.

This one was particularly interesting as we needed to attach a glass room to a single storey timber clad lodge. You can’t just bolt a Deponti Bosco veranda onto that and hope for the best!

So we built it a bespoke way in. Extra framework went in first, then rear panelling, so the veranda could fix on securely without losing the character of the lodge.

The result is a private, sheltered glass room style space that works in every season. A black aluminium frame sits neatly against the timber, with glass sliding doors to the front and left so the garden is always in view.

Thinking about buying a veranda or glass room? These are the questions we wish more people asked before they got in touch.

Do I need planning permission? Usually not. Most verandas fall under permitted development, unlike a conservatory. If you live in a listed building, check with your local authority first.

Will it fit my house? It comes down to structure as well as space. Getting this right before you fall in love with a specific model saves a lot of re-evaluating later, and choosing the right brand and model is something we do a lot.

Will I use it when it’s cold and wet? The roof, glazing and heating you choose make a big difference to how many months of the year you use it. Glass, louvre or polycarbonate roofs, LED lighting, infrared heaters and sliding doors are all worth asking about.

What happens when I enquire? A short design questionnaire first, so we understand how you plan to use the space. Then we get in touch with your options and arrange a free visit to measure up.

And the question that shapes everything else: how do you want to use your veranda? Morning coffee, dinners whatever the weather, somewhere for the kids to hang out.
