SCHROEDINGER’S CRATER
This crater is located near the lunar south pole on the far side and hence can only be seen from orbit. It is one of the perhaps best examples of a peak ring basin - in the interior, it has a discontinued ring of peaks with no central peak. Central rings are caused by hypervelocity impacts and in large craters where the central mound is too massive to be stable to form a single central peak. Instead it collapses and flows outwards forming a peak ring.
