My latest Oak sassy box.

The great thing about Oak is its open grain, as the growth rings develop each year the early growth of spring is less dense as the tree wants to draw as much water up for new leaf development. Later in the year the cells consolidate for strength. What does all that mean?

Well when you take a blowtorch to the wood for Shou Sugi Ban charring the early growth burns away quicker than the late growth. This gives a great texture which really pops when it's oiled.

The drawers have Shou Sugi Ban charring and are then finished with iridescent acrylic stipple. This was made to order as it's not a combination I have ever done. Unfortunately I didn't discuss the push holes in the rear rather than drawer pulls which the client preferred, as a result I'm making another 🀣

Finally, my wife Louise keeps telling me I need more professional looking photos so today I messed about with a photo box I have, I also did a few photos with other boxes.

What do you think?

All made in my wee home-based workshop here in Quarriers Village in Inverclyde.

This a John Traeger design called The Orchard. I've made a few of these but wanted to try something a bit different with this one.

The front is Sapele, the rear is Beech and the drawer fronts are Alpi SpA Grey Ash Vavona veneer. I acquired a free sample pack of veneer a while back and decided to put them to good use.

This one has an almost iridescent look to it when moved around, probably not visible in the pictures.

It only has one coat of Danish oil as I just finished it but I do love the look 😊

Wee sassy.

A box with attitude. Makes me think of Livvie our daughter and some of her friends. Only 13 but full of spirit.

The curve to the side like the tilt of the head when talking back. Lots going on with this box, Lichtenberg fractals burned into an Elm facade. These have been wire brushed and filled with cobalt blue resin. The core is beech and the wee arms are Iroko. The cap is spalted Beech with some lovely figuring. One coat of danish oil so far with more to come. The drawers are flocked with black fibres for that velvety smooth feel. Finally wee push holes in the back so as not to spoil that lovely facade.

Hope you like it 😏🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

What a hoot!

My latest box. Beech facade with an Elm body. The wings are Beech with California Burl veneer from the Alpi SpA Chocolate collection. The face is Beech with the California Burl but I did the accent around the eyes in Mahogany Burl veneer.

The beak is Ebony, a wee block I bought a while ago for a project that has long been forgotten πŸ™„. I wanted it finished as I have been avoiding the stained glass panels I need to get made for my Charles Rennie Mackintosh inspired cabinet, my last College project. No second year for me unfortunately, not sure if it's just my crafts or the market in general but sales have been awful. So it's back to the job market for me 😱 Anyone looking for an ex-paramedic who is pretty crafty 😏

Anyway, hope you like the owl, I am sure there are instructions online how to make something like this but I just thought I would wing it 😐

New tool Wednesday!

The sun is beating down, barely a breath of wind and hopefully the neighbours are out 😐

Time to fire up the new DEWALT thickness planer.

Ok I didn't actually get it today it was Saturday 😏

I had some gnarly 2.5 inch Oak that I ran through and got some amazing grain. Then I remembered I had a couple of old whisky barrel lid staves that I wanted to make into charcuterie boards and look what turned up 😱 It doesn't really translate well in the photos but this grain pattern is amazing, no idea what you would call it.

Then a wee photo dump, an Alpi SpA veneer owl with California Burl, partly complete. An oak sassy box I'm going to render with Shou Sugi Ban charring tomorrow and a door for the Charles Rennie Mackintosh cabinet I'm hoping to do stained glass panels for this weekend. My furniture Lecturer Scott made short work of cutting out the semi circles on the CNC yesterday. I'm trying to finish this before college closes in 2 weeks πŸ˜”

I love the workshop when it's like this 😍

Once fallen and decay begins, fungus migrates into wood fibres. If caught at the right time this process can yield spalted timber. Too soon, no formation, too late complete decay and rot.

This piece of Spalted Beech hit the sweet spot. My wood guy Ripping Router CNC got in touch the other week and told me he had some in stock.

Due to drastically spiraling costs for one of the stores I sell through I am withdrawing and hoping to promote more online. I think I need to post more often and quirky content.

So... a "Mother and Child" box, original designer is John Traeger. My rendition has a chunky Sapele body and this wonderful Spalted Beech drawer front where the spalting carries through. It was thick stock so some feathering of the edges resulted in bold concave drawer fronts. Wee push holes in the back means the facade remains unspoiled.

I see it more mother with child, the long gentle curve of her back bent over due to the weight of the child she is carrying and protecting.

This still requires to be finished with more coats of oil and wax.

An unplanned wee trip to Fort William friday provided and opportunity for a drive north and a wonderful, if drizzly, backdrop.

Earthquake box, some call it the cracked box but I think earthquake provides a more earthy description. A walnut facade with Lichtenberg fractals.

Walnut is soooooo expensive just now but I wanted to see how this looked as its been a while. Cobalt blue and silver pearl resin to fill the fractals and sanded to 500 grit... crazy πŸ€ͺ

I've not long acquired a walnut board from Ripping Router CNC in Greenock, a great source of timber. I want to try making a Nautilus box out of walnut 😱 The 2nd iteration is still gathering dust on the shelf as I am unable to price it, another made from walnut is now my pet project 😁

The paw boxes have been selling well I'm glad to say which us good as I am about to leave SDX πŸ˜• Onto the next chapter 😁

If you hear heavy breathing it's nothing to do with the force, it's me wearing a respirator 😏

Had a request for a spalted beech and acrylic stipple Chicago boxes.

College and now bat surveys at night have limited my time in the workshop but today I managed to oil up these two beauties.

The spalted beech was really p***y... almost too p***y and so very soft. One worked ok and turned out great, the other I decided to stabilise but not with resin but superglue. It soaks into the soft wood then hardens.

Sanded and then oiled. Just need 2 more coats and then some wax.

I just love the look of oiled spalted beech, to me it looks like tiger camouflage πŸ…

Paws for a moment if you will 😏

A couple of cheeky wee boxes just finished and waxed.

A wee single drawer box made from a lamination of Eucalyptus, Sapele, Iroko and Beech. The bigger box has an Iroko facade with Utile, Sapele and Beech.

Both finished with Danish oil and wax.
