3 more workshop days then it's market time πŸ˜€

The Centre, Livingston this Saturday and Sunday with The Crafters Roadshow

Trying to finish as many crafts as possible and these wee critters are the latest installment.

Tanga Tanga on the left and Panga Panga on the right. That's not their names, that's the woods used for the facades. Both exotic African woods. They each have Beech cores and Danish oil and wax finish.

I think wee tipsy looks almost kitten like... but that's just me 🀷

Whatever next πŸ€”

Ok a new version of an existing design. This is a florence box by David Picciuto which has been reworked. A facebook follower suggested altering the heart "like" box into more of an actual heart.

AI went awry when I asked it to alter the design so I resorted to a printed template and tipex. 4 small drawers now like the chambers of the heart. Admittedly the atrium and ventricles are not proportioned properly but does that really matter πŸ€”

It has an Iroko and Sapele facade with a Beech core and is finished with Danish oil and beeswax.

I'm going to contact the follower who came up with the idea and offer her this prototype.

I really quite like it and I'm going to call it Chordae after Chordae Tendineae which are strings that attach to heart valves, I think the source of the saying about pulling someone's heart strings.

Market Dates

So I thought it was time to put up when my next markets are.

I think the Handmade Scotland site does not allow markets to be promoted which I get as the site is meant to focus just on Scottish makers.

First market is 5th & 6th September at the Centre, Livingston. These markets are with The Crafters Roadshow and at this time I am unsure where in the facility the markets are held.

The next market is the following weekend, 12th & 13th September at the Metro Centre in Gateshead.

That same weekend Louise will be hosting a table at St Columba's School, Kilmacolm where my crafts will also be available.

Markets aside, below are a couple of designs I've worked on recently.

The Florence box with Alpi SpA veneer fronts on the drawers. A new wee hedgepig with its wee bairn, both functioning as keepsake boxes. Oh and I'm not sure if I posted wee tipsy earlier as well πŸ€”

The countdown is on. 10... 9... 8... 7...

You get the idea. Two weeks today I have my first market with The Crafters Roadshow at the Livingston Centre and then a week later at the Metro Centre 😱

I've been crazy busy in the workshop trying to get boxes complete while at the same time trying to finish a softwood table for a friend. Although to be honest anyone who gives you a softwood table to repair with resin and then finish shouldn't really be called a friend 🀣

Anyway a couple of new boxes to show prior to the market. The first is the Florence box, a design by David Picciuto. This has a Beech body but the drawers have been veneered with Alpi SpA Sottsass Orange veneer which I had hoped would pop right out, but I'm not sure it worked πŸ€” Maybe if I had used a darker wood like Sapele this would have worked better.

The second is a butterfly box, again Beech body with Sottsass Orange wing panels of veneer. I like it but not sure I LOVE it. The veneer is erratic by design in smaller sections but may be a repeating pattern when scaled up, unlike butterfly wings which I suspect are symmetrical. Again like the Florence, perhaps a darker wood would have provided a better contrast. I used a wee bit of Purpleheart for the body of the butterfly which gives it a wee pop.

Let me know what you think, any feedback before these markets will be greatly appreciated 😁

Wish me luck πŸ˜πŸ‘Š

So today was a mixed bag, I was supposed to finish a dining table but then the neighbour caught me and asked about steaming some wood 🀷 Never a dull day in my street 🀣

Anyway, couple of weeks ago I received a commission for a resin filled dragon. I made the blank two days later but the resin never cured properly. Managed to do another pour this week which worked out and so today I thought I could cut out the rough shape.

Here she/he/it is... I decided to make a wee video as some suspect a CNC is involved in making some of the boxes but it's not.

You can see in the video the blade pinches. Sometimes if the grain/fibres of the wood have tension built up the kerf, the track cut by the saw, can sometimes close over trappingg the blade. I've done it before and not realised and then the blade gets pulled off its wheels in a dramatic fashion. Normally a new blade and new underwear are all that is required and it's back to work. Managed to catch it today and finish the cut.

This is a block of Sapele. It will end up looking a little like the one below but with burgundy resin in Lichtenberg fractals 😏

Hope you like it.

My most recent versions of John Traegers The Orchard. I was making one for a customer and spotted a different veneer, very different from the Vavona grey I've used lately. Sottsass Orange is the new option, it really is quite striking, I think it looks like tiger fur. It's applied as a double layer as non-backed veneer comes in 0.6 mm sheets so doesn't survive well under my heavy handed sanding.

If you ever have nothing to do 😏 while scrolling, have a look at how veneer is made... ok it's not puppies juggling chainsaws or kittens flying a helicopter or some foody thing but it really is quite interesting πŸ€”

Anyway, this was made for a customer along with a traditional Vavona grey version with slight changes to some of the tight corners to make it more organic, now she has a choice.

Let me know which you prefer as I am at a market at the Livingston Centre the first weekend of September then the Metro Centre the following week 😱 so will make a few of these for then.

Hope you like it 😁

The other Serengeti was (mostly) finished this morning so thought I would post it. Louise has been asking about some stop motion animation like the old days but I had a piano stool, a decorative cover and a kitchen table that all needed finishing... oh and a number of boxes that need completion. Obviously I did my usual and was distracted by things that I really shouldn't be doing πŸ™„

This is a Beech body, a Sapele base and the drawer fronts are Muninga, a South-central African timber. I like it but it's not as dramatic as I had hoped it would be. Never mind at least I managed a wee video 😏 enjoy πŸ˜‰

My latest piece, Serengeti.

This is a design by John Traeger, an american box designer. I love how the name conjures thoughts of exotic places and far off travel (Serengeti that is, not Traeger 😏). It also makes me smile that I am making a wooden box... in the shape of a tree... from wood 🀣 the circle of life.

Anyhoo... Beech body, Sapele facade, Iroko base and Spalted Beech drawer fronts. The spalting is caused by fungus after the tree has been felled and left to sit for a while. Catch it at the right time and you can be rewarded with incredible figuring... too long and it becomes unstable and falls apart.

Last time I made one of these was back in Canada I think πŸ€”, this time I've made two, this version was first off the bench and I like it. 3 coats of Danish Oil and one coat of Beeswax for a rich lustre finish.

I've decided to try the Markets again so have a couple of The Crafters Roadshow events in September. I long for something like the one-of-a-kind Canadian market here in Scotland.

Hope you like it.

I posted this on handmade Scotland so thought I should also post it here.

This is a design called the Orchard by an American designer called John Traeger. I posted this box a couple of weeks ago and received a few orders for them and I am only finishing them up now.

I've been busy with bat surveys this last month and Louise now has me building a deck... oh my mistake, an outdoor kitchen apparently πŸ˜…

These mostly have Sapele facades with Beech bodies. The drawers have been faced with Alpi SpA Vavona Grey veneer which has an almost iridescent shimmer when you move it around. The problem with veneer is it's so darn thin... 0.6mm which means It's easy to sand right through with my big paws. Louise suggested I use two layers of veneer which I scoffed at... ends up it solved the problemπŸ™„

Oh well... I won't hear the end of this...
