Developing your own glaze recipes can be very rewarding. When you find the right combination magic happens.

It can take years to master the art of glaze making from scratch, but once you find a combination that works, it will be unique to you.

Bath Potters have been suppling the raw materials to make your own glazes since 1979. We have wide range of ingredients to start you on your exciting journey.

What toppings would you choose?

We have been experimenting with different materials, sprinkling on top of a glaze, whilst still damp, with some exciting results.

Recycled glaze chips, wood ash, dried up clay, and Spectrum Gold Crystals have been used on top of Amaco Aqua Celadon.

Tried & Tested

Sponges, diddlers and dabbers. All shapes, all sizes and all angles. For those hard to reach places, a sponge on a stick really is the only tool for the job.

For decorating, smoothing, finishing and cleaning up after the potting has stopped!

Our Stoneware Stony Grey Green Glaze is perfect for pairing.

The contrast of the super matt surface against smooth flux glazes is one of our favourite combinations at the moment.

Vanadium Pentoxide is a powerful metallic oxide, mainly used as a yellow colourant and strong flux in glazes.

On its own it will produce a weak yellow, but you can also achieve greens, blues or reddish browns when combined with Tin or Zirconium in a recipe.

In our examples we have used 10% addition in each of the clay, slip and a clear earthenware glaze, all fired to 1160degC.

Experiment at higher temperatures to produce volcanic textures, and metallic sheens.

Vanadium Pentoxide is highly hazardous and we recommend using the highest safety handling measures when mixing and firing. Including adequate ventilation, PPE and disposal.
