We were asked to bring a customer’s Linn LP12 back to life, and when we received it, we discovered it dated from 1974 with having virtually nothing done to it since then!

We gave it a full service including new springs and rubber suspension parts, a bearing wash-out and re-charge. Also a thorough clean up with adjustments to the hinges where they had been bent out of shape. Some some new feet and a drive belt saw it back to operational condition. The power supply was left as the original Mains-tied version, though we did replace the mains cable with one that included an earth to make it slightly safer! The old Ortofon VMS20E cartridge was looking rather sorry for itself, so this was replaced with a shiny new Ortofon 2M Blue. The original SME arm was in great condition and just needed a clean to be as good as new!

In this throw-away world, it’s a real pleasure to renovate a piece of HiFi from 1974, and for it to deliver quality audio that is completely up to date.
We have been rebuilding, servicing and updating Linn LP12s for over 25 years now, and like to feel we’ve got the measure of them. We can cover everything from one of the very earliest models (see above) up to the latest top-of-the-range Klimax LP12, with Magik, Selekt and Klimax models available to audition in our showroom.

Once upon a time we used to use the Logitech Harmony remote controls in many of our projects. We liked this remote because it was simple, affordable and got the job done with minimal fuss. There were of course some shortcomings, however these were usually circumventable. Logitech dropped the Harmony remotes in 2021, and we’ve struggled to come up with replacements that are as nice to use, and as good value for money.

Over the years we’ve used a number of remotes and looked at lots of others, but none have come close to the Logitech Harmony for value for money.

The closest that we’ve found so far has been the AVA cinema remote. This is a smart, modern looking remote with an uncluttered look, neat touch-screen and a programmable function pad.

Programming is relatively straight forward, and being an Android based device, it means that you can install manufacturer Apps for devices that need an App to control them, where a control driver is not native in the AVA world. AVA are busy growing the native control drivers for a wide variety of devices, and this library is expanding rapidly. A Bundle consisting of the Cinema Remote, charging dock and “Brain” is available at £1875 (inc VAT but not including programming), so this is not as low priced as the Logitech, but still a nice remote.

AVA have just launched iOS and Android versions of an App, so you use your Tablet or Phone as the control point, and these talk directly to the IR “Brain” to control your equipment, significantly bringing down the cost of control to that of the Brain on its own (£439- inc VAT but not including programming).

The concept of a Macro where one button press does a number of things is called a Flow in the AVA world, so a button can be programmed to do a whole variety of things to make your life simpler.

A customer recently brought in an old Pioneer PL112D turntable to get sorted. He had put a new drive-belt on, but it refused to play anything.. a quick check revealed that the stylus was destroyed & he opted to replace the old cartridge with an Ortofon 2M Red. This was duly fitted, however we noticed that the arm-lift mechanism wasn’t working. On investigation we discovered that the small plastic lever that transfers movement of the arm-lift lever to the bottom of the arm lift had broken.. Of course obtaining a new one was out of the question due to its age, however 5 minutes of measuring and design on TinkerCad, plus 30 minutes of 3D printing, and we had a new cam follower lever which only required a small amount of adjustment to make fit, fixing the problem.
This isn’t one of our normal turntables we focus on, however it seemed like a simple fix, so we went for it… Bringing life back to an old turntable from the late 1970s.
A very satisfying result and a very satisfied customer..

DALI Gardian OW6 Outdoor Loudspeakers

When DALI announced that they were producing an outdoor speaker, we didn’t exactly hold our breath, however we did eventually order a pair to see what they were like, with a couple of projects in mind.

Gardian Outdoor Speakers DALI Gardian Outdoor speakers

When these turned up, the first thought was that the box was larger than we were expecting… Looking at the speakers we were pleasantly surprised, with a really good quality feel to them. There is a well thought-out bayonet-style connection between the speaker and the wall bracket, which includes a decent looking waterproof gasket. The wall bracket itself includes a cover to keep the elements out and away from the gold-plated sprung terminals.

A few minutes fiddling with some speaker cables, and we had them producing sound – from our showroom Naim Uniti Nova, and I have to say we were very impressed. They produce a well-rounded sound with a crisp clear bass and no hint of harshness. I would be quite happy to have them on the wall of my living room!

These are undoubtably premium outdoor speakers made for the real outdoors in Europe where it rains (rather than a Californian version of outdoors!). They are well thought out and perform above expectations. At ~£800 / pair, we think they are great value, and promise to last longer than most outdoor speakers we’ve played with. Available in black or white finishes. Come and listen to a pair in our showroom!

The HiFi Rose RS520 streaming amp, is the HiFi the geek in you has always wanted.. It hits well on the numbers with a punchy 250Wpc output, has a large touch-screen display (pretty much the whole of the front panel), and sounds pretty good too.

HiFi Rose RS520

This has clearly been designed by engineers for engineers, and features a number of amusing front panel displays:

Want a 1980s VU meter display – sorted – what style do you want?

Want it to look like a retro radio tuner when listening to internet radio – sorted!

Want a clock display on the front panel – plenty of styles to choose from including a nixie tube look-alike!

Want to read what’s playing from the other side of the room – no problem with a 12″ wide screen.

Drive it from the front panel? – sorted! it’s a touch-screen.

Display Video streaming too – you got it; either on the front screen or connected to your TV via HDMI from NAS based videos or RoseTube (Rose’s version of YouTube).

Play a CD? – Yup! Just connect a USB optical disc drive.

Once you get your head around the fact that the front panel is effectively its own control device where you download “Apps” for your favourite services, it all starts to make sense. The Rose mobile App on the other hand, wants you to be firmly embedded into the Rose universe… When coming at it from more mainstream products (think Linn, Naim, BluOS, Sonos etc.) it is at first rather confusing, and took us quite a while to work out how to play from our streaming servers.. If you are living with it, it’s one of those things where you get used to it.

In terms of connectivity, you get 1 each of Analogue Line-In, Co-ax digital, Optical, USB DAC, HDMI EARC, which is probably enough for most simple applications. In terms of outputs, there is Analogue Pre-out, Co-ax out, optical out and HDMI out, plus of course binding posts for a single pair of speakers.

Network connectivity is via WiFi or Ethernet, and BluTooth V4.2 input is there too.

So, performance-wise, it ticks a lot of boxes with playback of up to 32bit 768Khz pcm and DSD512… When comparing it to similarly priced alternatives, it holds its head up and does not disappoint. It’s able to easily fill your room with high resolution playback, and when connected to some capable speakers packs a punch.

Does an expensive ethernet cable Vs a cheap one really make a difference?

In a word, Yes!
Though if your system has other problems it's probably worth addressing those first.
We regularly offer the Tellurium Q Black Diamond Ethernet cable to go between your Melco Switch or Server and Streaming player. At ~£914/m it is reassuringly expensive, but makes a significant impact on reducing noise in the system and keeping the signal integrity as high as possible. There's also the Ultra Silver II cable at ~£655/m which is nearly as good. At the end of the day, if you can hear an improvement, that's all the proof you need - come and hear the difference it can make and judge for yourself!
