On Saturday 27 June, we are celebrating a special day at Kaboodles Emporium - it's our
1st Birthday 💃🎁🍰🎈!

We're celebrating now having two showrooms and over 30 traders!

We want to welcome loyal customers, collectors and
connoisseurs and, of course,
newcomers!

The Town Crier will commence proceedings at 10am.
🥂Grab a glass of fizz, take a browse of the most diverse collection of antique, vintage, retro and collectible treasure while local musicians and entertainers amuse throughout the day! 🎵🎼

It's also . We wish them a fabulous day. If you're at the for their celebrations, we'd love to see you on your way home.

‘What's it?’ Wednesday

Did you ever make that picture at school where you did lots of wax crayoning and then painted it over with black paint mixed with glue? The wonder at scratching off a picture or design when that had dried was magical wasn't it?!

Well it turns out that, in design, there's a name for scratching one stuff off another stuff.

What is it?

It’s called sgraffito!

The word comes from the Italian ‘sgraffiare’, meaning "to scratch." (Graffiti comes from a similar route – graffiare: to scratch or scribble)

It's mostly seen in pottery and ceramics but also in architecture.

In pottery, the potter will make the pot from clay, apply a layer of coloured slip (a runny clay) and then scratch a design in the slip before firing, exposing the solid clay beneath.

Sgraffito has been used for centuries - scratching is a basic design process after all. So it will be seen in products from ancient cultures but its popularity rose during the Italian Renaissance period where a lot of antique pieces will hail from, created across Continental Europe.

In Britain, it was revived during the Arts and Crafts Movement - pieces show individual craftsmanship perfectly.

On buildings, sgraffito is seen when layers of coloured plaster are applied to a surface and scratched away to create decorative borders, friezes and Heraldic designs, for example.

Designs are imitated today by print and laser but genuine sgraffito will be hand-done and you’ll see rather irregular scratched lines and slight variations in the depth of the scratches.

Lovely to welcome the folks visiting Unofficial Summer Dickens and Eastgate House Steampunk Weekend! yesterday at Emporium.

Today we'll also see the first Little Market by The Little Shop at The Rochester Corn Exchange.

We'll see them, and you, we hope, again today (Sunday).
