The smallest rooms can make the biggest difference to everyday life.

When we reviewed plans for a proposed new-build home, some of our first questions weren’t about the kitchen or the main living spaces.

We wanted to know whether the cloakroom would be comfortable and convenient for a busy household. Whether the utility had enough space for the jobs it needed to do. Whether the boot room should have its own entrance from outside.

We even asked whether a shower near the gym would make sense for the way the family planned to use it.

Individually, these might seem like small details. Together, they influence how smoothly a home works every single day.

It’s easy to focus on the rooms that make the biggest impression. We believe the quieter, hardworking spaces deserve just as much consideration - particularly when you have the opportunity to plan them before building begins.

A little silver moment for By Two Studio! 🥈✨

We’re absolutely delighted to have won Silver in the Best Businesswoman in a Creative Business category at the Best Businesswomen Awards 2026!

There were big smiles all round (as you can probably tell from the photograph!) and it was such a lovely evening celebrating alongside so many inspiring women in business.
Building By Two Studio together has been quite a journey, and we’re incredibly proud of the homes we’ve helped create and the relationships we’ve built along the way.

For us, creativity is about so much more than choosing beautiful fabrics and finishes. It’s about understanding the people behind each project, finding thoughtful solutions and bringing together all the little details that make a house feel like home.

So receiving recognition for the creative side of what we do feels particularly special.

A big thank you to the Best Businesswomen Awards, our wonderful clients and everyone who continues to support us.

A house can look perfect on paper but will it work in real life?

When previous clients asked us to review the plans for their proposed new-build home, we already knew a great deal about how they lived.

So, rather than simply looking at the size and arrangement of the rooms, we started asking different questions.

~ Would the utility room work for their everyday routines?
~ Was the cloakroom in the right place?
~ How would the family move between spaces?
~ Where would the furniture go?
~ And importantly, would the home still work beautifully for them in the years to come?

These are the things we think about when we’re designing a home. The details that might seem insignificant on a floor plan, but can make all the difference to everyday life.

It’s why we believe the best homes are designed from the inside out, with interior design considered early in the process.

Some of the most interesting homes are the ones that don’t feel as though everything arrived at the same time.

We love introducing new pieces, but we’re equally interested in what is already there.

An antique with a story. A piece of furniture a client has owned for years. Something inherited that perhaps needs a new setting to make it feel relevant again.

At The Heritage Home, this mix of old and new became an important part of the character of the rooms.

Contemporary pieces sit alongside antiques and more traditional details, giving the home a sense of history without it feeling stuck in the past.

For us, that’s far more interesting than starting again simply for the sake of it.

A home should have layers - including the ones that were there before us.

You don’t need to know exactly what you want before speaking to an interior designer.

In fact, most of our clients don’t.

You might know that your home no longer works as well as it could. You may have saved dozens of images but struggle to explain what connects them. Or perhaps you’re about to renovate an entire house and simply don’t know where to begin.
That’s completely normal.

Our job is to ask the right questions, listen carefully and gradually make sense of what matters to you - both aesthetically and in the way you want to live.

From there, we can start to turn lots of thoughts, ideas and practical requirements into one clear direction for your home.

So if you’re waiting until you’ve worked everything out before getting in touch, you really don’t need to.

The finished photographs are always lovely to share.

The middle of a renovation? Usually a little less glamorous.

There are stripped-back rooms, building dust, boxes, site decisions and moments when it can be difficult to imagine that the finished home will ever look quite like the drawings.

But this stage matters.

It’s where so much of the design starts to become real, and where keeping sight of the overall vision becomes particularly important.

We spend a lot of time moving between plans, samples, site and the finished design, checking that the decisions being made along the way still support what we set out to create.

Because there’s quite a journey between the first idea and the final cushion being placed.

And we’re there for much more than the pretty bit at the end.

feels particularly special to return this year with recognition for
the creative side of the business.

By Two Studio has evolved enormously over the past year, but what sits
at the heart of it hasn’t changed - creating thoughtful, considered
homes and making the experience of getting there as enjoyable and
reassuring as possible for our clients.

For us, creativity isn’t only about how a home looks. It’s in the
problem-solving, the conversations, the ideas that are questioned and
refined, and the hundreds of decisions that eventually come together to create somewhere that feels completely personal to the people living there.

We’re looking forward to celebrating alongside all the other finalists
at the awards in October.

We’ve never believed a home needs to shout to make an impression.

For us, the rooms that stay with you are often the ones that feel quietly considered.

The proportions feel right, the materials sit comfortably together and there is enough detail to make the space interesting without everything competing for attention.

Most importantly, it still feels like a home.

That balance is something we’re always looking for in our work - spaces that feel refined and individual but also relaxed enough to live in.

Beautiful now but designed with the years ahead in mind.

What are we really looking for during a design site visit?

For Natalie and Jenna, it is an opportunity to step into the space as it takes shape and carefully review the details that will influence the finished home.

On this visit, we checked the cabinetry against the technical drawings, reviewed finishes, advised on positioning and proportions, answered questions and identified anything that needed correcting.

This ongoing involvement forms part of our Design Implementation Oversight service. It helps keep decisions aligned with the agreed design and ensures the details considered during the design process are carried through on site.

Because a beautifully resolved home is shaped not only by the initial vision, but by the many decisions made along the way.
