October 28th, and this is Lilias Thrompey, who died 8th April 1703.

Three days until Halloween, and Lilias Thrompey is already causing concern among the local witching community.

Not because she's plotting anything particularly sinister, mind you. It's because she's attempting to practise a simple levitation charm and has somehow managed to float her own cat into a tree.

This is fairly typical of Lilias.

A witch in training until the very end, she was well meaning, enthusiastic and spectacularly clumsy. Her hat is infamously three sizes too small, and her coven used to joke that the only way she'd stay upright on a broom was with a set of stabilisers.

Still, she has her gifts. Lilias is a formidable banjo player, and her newt-charming abilities are the envy of witches far more accomplished than herself.

She maintains that these are the foundations of a perfectly respectable magical career.

The coven remains unconvinced.

October 27th, and meet Elsie Cordell.

She died 11th December 1917.

If you were to ask the respectable folk of Elsie's acquaintance about her, they'd lower their voices, exchange a meaningful glance and suggest that she'd been a little too fond of life.

Elsie would take that as a compliment.

She was a young woman with a sharp tongue, a curious mind and very little patience for rules designed to keep her in her place. She enjoyed a beautiful face and preferred a hefty cleavage. Famous for her love of a lively evening and the occasional decision that seemed like an excellent idea at the time.

There were consequences, naturally. There are always consequences when one refuses to be sensible.

But Elsie never did see the point of spending one's life worrying about what might be said afterwards.

She remains rather the same in death: bold, flirtatious and inclined to laugh at precisely the wrong moment.

If she offers you a knowing wink, you'd be wise to ask no questions.

October 26th and today we invite you to say Hullo to Catherine Earnly, who passed on 27th October 1835.

If there's one thing Catherine Earnly has learnt from studying the past, it's that the world has always been full of peculiarities. People have risen and fallen, empires have crumbled, and perfectly sensible fashions have come and gone without anyone stopping to ask why.

She finds it all endlessly fascinating.

Catherine is also convinced that death is merely a temporary inconvenience before one's next reincarnation. Her own, however, seems to have gone rather astray.

She was expecting wings, or perhaps four elegant legs and a talent for leaping. A butterfly would have suited her admirably. A gazelle might have been a little more exciting.

Instead, here she is, still wearing spectacles and holding a book.

She has written to complain, naturally. Several times.

Until the universe puts things right, Catherine remains busy with her research, her theories, and her fierce little Connect 4 tournaments.

Tomorrow is her 'Deathday'.

October 25th:

Today we meet Eve Snowby who passed on 23rd December 1945.

Eve Snowby is not, by her own admission, a sentimental ghost. She doesn't cry at Christmas films, she doesn't sing carols, and she considers tinsel a dreadful nuisance.

The black sparkly Santa hat, however, is essential.

Eve died just before Christmas, and there's something about the season that has stayed with her ever since. She loves the little rituals: the first lights in the windows, the familiar songs, the quiet moment when the world seems to pause and remember those who aren't there to share it.

She'll tell you it's all rather silly, naturally. Then she'll straighten a crooked decoration when she thinks nobody's looking.

Eve has a wickedly dry sense of humour and a soft spot for lonely people. She knows better than most that Christmas isn't always the happiest time of year.

Sometimes, she says, a little sparkle is enough.

And if you catch her looking wistful, don't ask why. Offer her a biscuit instead. She appreciates good manners.

Here is the fearsome Capt. Blackthorn Rook, who perished on 3rd June 1712!

A pirate captain needs three things: a sturdy ship, a sharp cutlass, and a reputation so terrifying that nobody asks awkward questions.

Blackthorn Rook had all three.

The ship was seaworthy enough, the cutlass was well polished, and the reputation was largely down to an impressive beard, a fearsome scowl and a voice that could frighten the rum out of a barrel.

The beard, however, was a work of fiction.

So, as it turned out, was the idea that Capt. Rook was a man.

In life, Blackthorn had discovered that the quickest way to command a pirate crew was to give them exactly the sort of captain they expected to see. A little disguise, a lot of nerve, and not a single person brave enough to ask what lay beneath all that facial hair.

She took her secret to the grave.

October 23rd: The Curious Tale of Bonnie and Beatrice Bindley.

There were once two sisters, Bonnie and Beatrice Bindley, who shared a body but seldom shared an opinion.

Beatrice was a pious and virtuous soul, steadfast in her faith and gentle in her dealings with the world. She believed that kindness was never wasted, that forgiveness was a holy gift, and that even the darkest heart might yet find its way towards the light. Each evening, she prayed for the souls of the troubled, the wicked and, most fervently of all, her own sister.

For Bonnie was a different creature altogether.

Where Beatrice saw the hand of Providence, Bonnie suspected an opportunity. Where one offered a prayer, the other considered a bargain. She had a sharp wit, a curious mind and a fondness for those little transgressions that Beatrice called sins and Bonnie called life's small pleasures.

Yet for all their differences, the sisters were bound together in a way few could understand. They had shared every sunrise and every sorrow, every whispered secret and every quarrel. Neither could stray far without the other following.

And so it was that, on 21st July 1769, they departed this world together, as they had lived in it.

Beatrice had prayed that they might never be parted. Bonnie, though she would sooner have swallowed a thorn than admit it, had wished for much the same.

Now they haunt Endly beneath a single sheet, one crowned with a halo, the other bearing horns. Virtue and temptation, faith and mischief, forever joined in an embrace that even death could not undo.
