I’m The truth about choosing pendant for lighting…

Pendant lights are often one of the last decisions people make in a project, but they have one of the biggest impacts on how a space looks and feels.

What seems like a simple choice quickly becomes anything but…

✨ Is the scale right for the room?
✨ Is the drop height correct for the ceiling and furniture below?
✨ Will it provide enough light, or is it purely decorative?
✨ Does the weight require additional ceiling support?
✨ Is the fitting centred correctly with the table, island or staircase?
✨ Does it complement the architecture and the rest of the scheme?
✨ Will it still look timeless in five or ten years?

Get just one of these wrong, and even the most beautifully designed room can feel “off”. A pendant that’s too small disappears, one that’s too large dominates the space, and an incorrect drop can make a room feel awkward—or even become a daily obstacle!

Lighting isn’t just about choosing a beautiful fitting. It’s about proportion, balance, function and creating atmosphere. It’s one of the finishing touches that can completely elevate a home.

This is where working with an interior designer makes all the difference. We don’t just select a light because it’s pretty—we consider the room as a whole, calculate the correct scale and positioning, coordinate with your electrician, and ensure every detail works together seamlessly.

The result? A home that feels effortlessly balanced, beautifully lit, and thoughtfully designed from every angle.

Which pendant is your favourite from these projects?

I was reminded about this 2019 project this week and it’s been great to look back at the photos. Inspired by my client’s love of interior designer Ferris Rafauli it was a lesson in combining textures including the stunning zebra wood veneer, brushed steel, ribbed glass and textured painted wood. Such a contrast from the painted shaker style kitchens that we often see in and around Sevenoaks (which are obviously beautiful in their own right too!). It was super fun to work on with Stoneham Kitchens Let me know what you think - love it or loath it!!!

The brief for this main bedroom was simple: create a calm, relaxing sanctuary while maximising storage without compromising on style.

A soft, neutral palette forms the foundation of the scheme, layered with warm textures and subtle blue and terracotta accents to bring a sense of tranquillity and balance. The beautifully upholstered headboard creates an elegant focal point, adding both comfort and a touch of luxury.

Storage was a key requirement, so bespoke shaker-style wardrobes were designed to make full use of the available space. Integrated shelving adds character and practicality, providing space for books, accessories and personal touches without creating visual clutter.

One of the room’s most discreet features is the hidden bathroom door, seamlessly incorporated within the wardrobe design. This clever solution maintains clean lines throughout the room and helps the space feel calm and uncluttered.

Above the bed, a statement pendant light introduces texture and softness, creating a striking centrepiece that elevates the overall design. Functional wall lights positioned either side of the bed provide practical task lighting for reading while freeing up valuable bedside surface space.

The result is a bedroom that feels serene, sophisticated and highly functional: a space designed for rest, relaxation and effortless everyday living. Cushions Headboard upholstery Pendant light

If you’re trying to create the perfect bathroom lighting scheme and are relying on the usual grid pattern of ceiling downlights, that will not work. It’s not enough. It will never give you the right light in the right places.

You must layer up: use downlights, yes! But you also need wall lights, uplights, niche lights a feature light and maybe a backlit mirror. All at the correct height and in the correct places.

Save this post for inspiration or message Bathroom Lighting if you’d like more help.

A Sevenoaks home that feels luxurious yet comfortable and easy to live in.

The interior design aim for this recently completed Sevenoaks new-build home was simple: to create a home that feels refined, but still warm and welcoming.

One of the key challenges was scale. The rooms and hallway were generous — almost cavernous — so our focus was on bringing everything back to a more human level. We introduced glass doors and shelving partitions to gently break up the spaces, making them feel more intimate, usable, and connected, without losing the sense of openness.

The palette is neutral at its core, layered with earthy greens, warm browns, and soft terracotta tones to add depth and warmth. Nothing feels overdone — just carefully put together so that each space flows naturally into the next.

A lot of the thinking behind this project isn’t immediately obvious, but it makes all the difference. How the light moves through the rooms, how spaces connect, and how everything works for day-to-day living were all key to shaping the design.

The result is a home that not only looks beautiful, but feels comfortable, functional, and built to last.

If you’re planning a new build or renovation and want a home that truly works for you, I’d love to help.

One of my favourite parts of every project is weaving in the pieces that already mean something to my clients. Heirlooms, well-loved furniture, treasured finds—these are the things that make a space feel personal. I work hard to make sure they’re part of the final design so the home doesn’t just look beautiful, it truly feels like them… and always feels like home.

A simpler life: that seems to be what many of us are hankering after. So my trend predictor for this month is simple: a return of analogue rooms. Spaces in our homes free from all digital interruptions. Spaces to relax, destress, decompress, read, play games and practice hobbies. What do you think? Am I right?
