Accent chairs are more than simple seating. They shower a room in personality. Some admittedly more comfy than others, they can be there as a conversation starter or a relaxing piece. And the beauty is there not just a living room. Occasional chairs work in EVERY room (yes even a bathroom or kitchen if the space is big enough) So here’s a round up of my favourite from budget to bonkers bucks. Feel free to add yours

It started out as the kitchen of nightmares. 40 years as a student house and I cannot begin to tell of the state it was in (zoom in on the first image to see the police tape) It was slow process removing a useless chimney breast and stud walls, installing steels and taking the whole thing back to brick. And at one point looking even worse than it originally did, the valuer came round to say it was worth less than we bought it for so they weren’t going to lend us anymore money at that point. We got creative and bought an ex display kitchen for £1200 when it should’ve been £12000 and finally got the rest of the money released.
With vision, architects plans, and a wing and a prayer, we finally got there.

One of my favourite kitchens mainly because of this beautiful antique shop counter we turned into a kitchen island. The client didn’t want a kitcheny kitchen - they wanted somewhere that felt more like a room with interesting pieces and artwork. One of the inspirational images was the Devol designed former kitchen of with its stunning centrepiece. The client loved the idea so I did what I do best and endlessly trawled the internet and spoke to various sources until we tracked down this old shop counter. As well as being the right size, it had the perfect features for an island with drawers for cutlery etc, and a central glass cupboard for crockery. Despite the kitchen being months off finishing, we knew this would be the centrepiece and being a one off it wasn’t worth the risk not buying there and then. A courier brought it up and it sat in storage till the kitchen was almost complete. Once in situ the electrician added sockets (it needed to be a practical workspace) and a quartz top added. Enough overhang hang means the plain side functions as a seating area for the client’s young family who can sit eating/doing homework whilst their parents bake up a storm.

IKEA has unveiled a new edition of its experimental PS collection, the first in nearly 10 years. It’s known for letting designers have a bit more fun. Shown at Milan design week, the 44 strong collection has got a lot of people talking. (The PS range often ends up as collectors pieces) I’ve picked out a few I really like and some that I’m politely saying no to.

Ikea, Ikea PS,

A fascinating talk by Lady Burlington and Edward Bulmer about the 24 new paint colours all inspired by the Derbyshire house.
I’ve added my three favourites though I have to say they’re all really beautiful.
Then popped over to The Cavendish with and for a glass of fizz and admire the gorgeous new design by design doyenne Nicola Harding.

Along with stripes, I cannot get enough checkerboard. It’s a pattern that’s been reused, adapted, and reimagined in seemingly every possible way. And like a stripe it can be used in traditional interiors (feeling elegant and architectural) and also in contemporary or minimalist spaces where it reads as graphic and a statement. So I’ve done a little weekend round up of my favourite checkerboard pieces out there.

Sharing a bathroom we recently finished for a client which had to work hard for its money because safety was paramount. It’s for an older client who didn’t want to compromise on look, but needed a bathroom that minimised the risk of slips and falls. I’ll do a post with more details but surfaces, stylish grab rails, and well thought out lighting were carefully considered features of the design.

The story of how these doors originally started life at a Lebanese restaurant 300 miles away in London. I wanted Crittall doors for the kitchen but a full electrical rewire blew that budget. Not deterred I found a set of old wooden doors on ebay from a Lebanese restaurant and had them couriered up (£560 in total). Our wonderful joiner added the middle bars and we painted them black. They now allow light to flood into the kitchen 🤩
