If you haven't booked on already - perhaps this fantastic poster it took me an inordinate amount of effort to make on Canva will entice you to join us for our Christmas wreath workshop this winter. 🤞

Grand plans to host the workshop in our new studio space were thwarted quite abruptly (as you may know if you've read our previous post) and we'll now be hosting the wreath workshop at our flower field, inside the big barn. But we're still very excited about it, and there are certainly lots of pros to hosting it on the farm:

- You get to personally harvest the willow whips for your wreath bases.

- We can provide you with the freshest greenery for your wreaths, foraged from the hedgerows around our flower patch.

- The barn will be awash with festive cheer, and there'll be plenty of space to spread out for your crafting - especially when wrestling those willow whips into submission.

- I Said Bread will be supplying some delicious baked festive snacks, and there'll be hot drinks.

- We'll provide all the materials, including an array of dried flowers and seed heads we grew this year, to make your finished Christmas wreath look spellbindingly beautiful for your front door.

- Free onsite parking

- Bad cracker calibre jokes, Christmas music jangling through the barn PA, and lots of grumbling about this year's drought - all for the bargain price of £50 pp!

Grim tidings! The week before last we discovered we'd lost a sizeable chunk of our dried flower stock to mould. If you're enjoying your breakfast, don't swipe.

This has never happened to us before; we're always very careful to ensure everything is bone dry before we flat-pack it and move it into storage. Storage has usually meant our bedrooms and living rooms but this year we'd put aside a bit of cash to rent a small room as a studio for the winter.

We thoroughly checked it out before moving our stuff in, (dry, clean, warm, no visible signs of damp or existing mould - ✓✓✓✓) and we'd barely begun properly unpacking as things were still busy on the farm.

Only two weeks later, we found that mould had spread like wildfire through crates and crates of our flowers. We stopped ourselves from sobbing as there was apparently enough moisture in the air already, but we have had to toss quite a few bags' worth.

This means we'll have much less stock than previous years for dried flower sales, which will sadly impact our winter income. After the driest growing season ever, this hefty dose of irony is not lost on us...and to think of all the watering, energy, labour, etc. that went into getting those flowers to that stage. It's a real kick in the nuts.

Needless to say, we've now left that place after salvaging what we could, and are back to drying everything in our homes and kind friends' homes, with dehumidifiers humming away into the night. Silver-ish lining is that we've been able to do a few emergency picks from the field while the rain and frost are holding off, to recoup some of the loss.

Anyway, getting to the main point: our Christmas wreath workshop that was supposed to be taking place in the studio on Saturday 5th of December has been relocated to a covered barn at the farm. It will still be dry and less mouldy than the studio, so do come along! You can find all the event details and book tickets via our website, on the 'Events' page. (Link in bio).

It's been a fortnight saturated with goings-on: markets, farm open days, subscription orders, shop deliveries, a wedding...and a funeral (our first).

Posting this with the permission of the sweet customer who commissioned us to make a dried flower casket spray for her late mother. She brought us some beautiful but intimidating dried hydrangeas from her mother's garden for us to try and incorporate into the arrangement (daunted human head for scale). Delighted to report we managed to! Here's the finished spray.

We've seen the back of the drought for another year, but now that the morning dew is back in town we've had to clear all our dried flowers out of the barn and move them to safety. We'll continue to process them for wreaths, bunches etc. for the Christmas markets, with the soothing hum of the dehumidifier in the background.

Anyway, you can catch us TOMORROW (Sunday 12/9) at Nether Edge Farmers' Market from 12-4pm, if you'd like to lay your hands on our last fresh flowers of the year and/or the first dried ones.

We had a big wedding order this week that ol' Droughty was hell bent on making as stressful as possible for us. But our sycophantic dahlia pampering seemed to pay off. Zinnias, cosmos and most of the other big hitters decided to come through for us right on time as well. Pretty pleased with this pink petal profusion, and we gather the bride was too. Yeehaaaa!

A little bit of euphoria amid the most depressing growing season yet. These pics are of the things that we are managing to keep alive. Not pictured: all the stuff that went to seed back in the first heatwave/turned to crisp in the Moss Valley desert.

Strikes and gutters; we've got lots of stuff drying and the weekly bunches for the shops are relentlessly bright and cheerful, unlike us right now.

Good morrow! If you enjoy yoga and don't mind plants, the following might pique your interest...

'Flow & Flowers' is a one-off event taking place on Saturday 5th of September from 1.30-4pm at our flower farm.

Relax, it's not us giving the class - we're teaming up with Meersbrook's own Sarah Cotton of CottonYoga to host what promises to be a delightful afternoon practicing yoga outdoors on the farm, and then picking your own selection of flowers to take home.

All the info you need before booking is on Sarah's website (link in bio). There are only a limited number of spaces, so if you're keen don't wait around, we implore ye.

This week has been all about drying stuff, which is bitterly pertinent as it hasn't rained in about 249,754,00000000 days.

Around this time of year we begin picking flowers with a 50-50 mentality: some for fresh bunches and some to set aside for dried stock to see us through the winter. Here are some photos of this lovely new phase of production (including embarrassing evidence that we've really dropped the ball with the weeding lately - avert thine eyes!)

Huge thanks to our sidekick, Julie, of Sheffield Fruit Trees
fame, who spent her last few days of casual employment with us conditioning some very prickly plants for drying, scrabbling about in the dirt hand-weeding metres and metres of redshank three times the size of our flower plants, and helping me locate my lost phone in the undergrowth every ten minutes.

BIG PLANT SALE + KICK-OFF FOR PYO SESSIONS!

Good day! We grow on such a large area that we can't afford to be je**ed around by the whims of nature, so we always oversow to allow for erratic germination, slugs/birds, random hail storm damage, etc.

We have now planted all we need, and it would be great to find a home for these remaining lil guys while partially covering some of our costs (potting compost, seeds, containers).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our favourite hollow mass of metal and plastic - the polytunnel! 2 years old! They grow up so fast, don't they? We drank shots of runoff rainwater from our IBC to mark the occasion.

Here's an appreciation post to celebrate all the ways it has enhanced our business, and in turn, our lives since we erected the little tyke back in 2024...

(Streamlined propagation, a space big enough to accommodate essential squash curing, guaranteed protection from the elements for selected flower crops, covered space to host workshops and events, hanging space to dry ornamental grasses, seed heads, wet tents and sometimes our laundry, have tea breaks in the winter, the occasional band practice...it's hard to imagine life without it.)

So thank you once again to everyone who contributed to the Crowd Funder, which ultimately made it possible for us to buy the polytunnel, and to First Tunnels Polytunnels for a top notch structure.

WOAH that's May done, then. Pretty happy to have sent out the first few bunches of the season to our flower subscribers yesterday - cheers to our returning subscribers and to the newbies - the seasonal dance has begun! (It's not too late to become a subscriber btw - see the link to the website in our bio for more info).

Since someone cranked up the heat we've been panting along like cartoon dogs trying to keep up with the bed prep, planting, watering (don't worry, high-powered 100m hosepipe not pictured/ red can for symbolism), and the suddenly imperative picking, now that our tunnel flowers have got their bleddy act together. Nature waits for no one.

and have already been amazingly supportive in stocking our late spring/ early summer mixed bunches, and we're excited to keep churning them out. No bunch ever looks the same and over the course of the season we'll be including some new varieties we've not yet tried (lisianthus - don't let us down this year, girl!) so get yourselves to one of those fine establishments!
