Let’s talk Victorian Transferware - why is it important?

It helped democratize decorative goods. Before industrial production, finely decorated ceramics were expensive luxury items. Transfer printing made attractive tableware affordable for middle-class households.

It gives us a cultural insight, the images chosen for transferware reveal what Victorians admired and consumed:

* Romantic views of the countryside
* Interest in archaeology and history
* Fascination with travel and empire
* Popular literature and current events

A single plate can provide clues about manufacturing technology, trade networks, and social trends of the 1800s.

This pottery represents an industrial innovation. Transferware sits at the intersection of art and industry. The technique was one of the innovations that helped make ceramics a major manufacturing industry during the Industrial Revolution.

Inspired by the magic of the Chelsea Flower Show and the timeless beauty of gardens that feel collected rather than created 🌿

Our garden renovation has landed!! Boy have we waited for this one. We’ve been leaning into vintage pieces — aged terracotta, reclaimed stone, weathered pots, old ironwork and details with a story to tell. There’s something special about mixing new planting with objects that already carry character and history.

We wanted the space to feel established, romantic and slightly undone… the kind of garden that looks like it’s evolved over decades.

Chelsea always reminds us that the most beautiful gardens aren’t just designed — they’re layered.
