Anything But Plastic wishes you all a Happy Earth Day 2023!

This year's theme is 'Invest in our planet'. Investment is about putting in the effort now in order to improve your outcome in the future. If we all do a little bit today to protect the planet, how will the combined effort of our impact be felt in the future?

We all have a stake in this planet, and together, we can help reverse the decline of this system that supports us all. That little bit of effort now will pay off later! So whether you are attending an Earth Day rally like 'The Big One' this weekend organised by Extinction Rebellion in London, or taking smaller actions like doing a litter pick, turning off the lights, or choosing to buy a sustainable product over what may seem like the cheaper, easier option, all of the actions you do make a difference.

When times are tough it is easier to focus on what's going on right now rather than what is ahead of us, but we will have to live in that future too, and doing a little bit now is better than sacrificing a lot later!

What will you be doing today to invest in our planet and celebrate Earth Day?

The deadline for 2nd class postage may have passed, but the cut-off for 1st class post is 10am on Friday the 16th, so you've still got time! Order sooner rather than later due to the Royal Mail strikes, delivery times aren't guaranteed this Christmas, so better be safe than sorry šŸ˜…šŸŽ

Please place your Christmas orders before 10am on Monday the 12th of December to hit Royal Mail's cut-off point for 2nd class post Christmas delivery!

As Royal Mails 2nd class deadline is so early this year, I've decided to offer the option of 1st class post as well for a limited time. The Christmas post cut off for 1st class post is the 16th of December, so you'll have an extra four days to order if you are only just getting around to ordering your gifts.

1st class post costs £4.45
2nd class post costs £3.35

If you are hoping to have an order delivered before the 25th, please order sooner rather than later, as Royal Mail has strikes ongoing which are affecting delivery times.

Best wishes and festive cheer,

Jenny

What news? A Black Friday Sale? On Anything But Plastic? By Jove, that’s jolly useful!

Normally for Black Friday, I do a charity drive where I donate money to charity for each order. But… everyone seems to be tight on cash this year, (an educated guess based on my evidence of the worst November sales figure I’ve ever had) so for this Black Friday, I’m actually doing a sale! This year I would like to spread the generosity to you, my lovely customers. 😊

If you spend over Ā£25 in Anything But Plastic’s shop you will get 10% off your order.
If you spend over Ā£50 in Anything But Plastic’s shop you will get 15% off your order.
The sale starts at midnight tonight and runs until 11:45 pm on Sunday the 27th. Discount applied automatically at checkout.

This should give you a chance to get a bit of a discount off your favourite repeat order items such as Denttabs, FitPit, shampoo bars etc.* These offers are also valid on gift vouchers, meaning if you order a gift voucher at a discount price, the voucher will be worth the full value, so the discount is saved for a future purchase! (A sneaky way to save on Xmas presents!)

But I thought ABP didn’t do sales… Ahem. I still don’t like sales, but with plummeting order numbers, I have to reframe my aversion. So, I’d like to present this not as a sale, but as a reward to my loyal customers who are keeping up the fight against plastic pollution by trying to reduce their consumption of single-use plastic. Well done you, and if no one has said this to you recently, then let me say, I am really proud of the effort you are putting in to live a more sustainable lifestyle. You are making a difference, and together, we can make waves of change.

Thank you for your continuing support,

Jenny

* Please be aware that some products might be on ā€˜pre-order’ status, as I’ve decided to add stock to the inventory that is on the way to me but has not yet arrived (mainly due to Royal Mail/Parcelforce strikes delays). If you place an order and your basket includes an item that is on ā€˜pre-order’ please note that this will delay the dispatch of your order until that stock arrives, which could be up to a full week's delay.

Anything But Plastic will be trading at Lichfield's Christmas Fayre tomorrow Sunday 20th November, 10am - 4pm. Please come and say hello if you are in the area! Hoping for a good turnout and decent weather šŸ¤ž

You can see a brief glimpse of our stall from last year at 1:05 in the video below... Hopefully, this year we won't be blocked by the queue for the sausages like we were last year, so our customers can find us this time šŸ˜…

ABP turns 5! Ok, ok, it was technically the 5-year mark on the 17th of October, but I’ve been a bit busy and distracted... So I’m late to share the milestone, but share it I shall, as it is an accomplishment that I am proud of as a small business owner.

Anything But Plastic was one of the first plastic-free shops in the UK and I am proud of our doing our bit in spreading the word about the issue of plastic pollution, as well as helping many people in the UK cut down on their personal plastic consumption. I had no idea that the problem of single-use plastics would become mainstream when I started this venture, and although the fight is far from over, it is incredible to see the attention that has been paid to the issue. I hope that this continues and that change is now pushed through from the top to regulate and reduce. We, the general public, want a solution to plastic pollution, don’t we?!

This year though has been tough business-wise. I've struggled to keep the business afloat, and have had to make some very painful decisions, the worst of which was to have to let my employees go. I also had to give up ABP’s office space and move the business in its entirety into our small flat.

Still hanging on in there, if only just - small businesses and recessions do not get on well together.

I feel like I’ve come full circle, from starting up the business based out of my flat; to ABP’s heyday of 5 part-time employees at once and lovely office space, and now back to just me in the flat again. Who knows what will happen in the next five years - anything is possible.
Anyway, thank you to all of ABP’s wonderful customers over the last 5 years, you’ve kept this small business dream alive!

Thanks for your support,

Jenny

Anything But Plastic is downsizing – we can no longer afford an office (or staff… change that we to I), so we (…ahem… just me) are returning to working from home (read as tripping over stock in my flat.)

To manage this sadly necessary contraction, there have to be some sacrifices. It’s high time for a cut-down, so I’ve put over 30 products on sale!

Some of these products will not be restocked once they have sold out due to the new space and cash considerations… So, if you have had your eye on any of our products, please consider treating yourself! You will be helping me out massively and making the game of stock Tetris I have to play in a few weeks a bit more manageable.

This is not quite the end, ABP goes on - if not quite in the format one is accustomed to.

We say goodbye to Team ABP - Dean and Chloe, who have been an excellent Team since I moved to Sheffield at the end of last year. Thank you both for all of your hard work!

From around the middle of October, ABP will be a new streamlined affair, which will hopefully be able to keep your favourite products constantly in stock. Please bear with me during this time of transition, as this is now a one-person business again, and I am doing my best to keep it all going.

Times have changed, people pay attention to this issue in a way they did not 5 years ago when ABP was set up. People power has pushed some big companies into taking action, and for that, I salute you, fellow eco-warriors. I’ve seen competition rise and fall around me, and I can at least take pride in Anything But Plastic paving the way here in the UK.

Thank you, and all of our customers for all of your support over the years. ABP will celebrate its 5th birthday in October, I can’t believe it has been half a decade since I opened shop! ABP has only got this far thanks to you, our lovely bunch of loyal customers who make it all worthwhile.

Here is to new and interesting times ahead!

All the best,
Jenny

The National Allotment Society is working with the charity Buglife this year, and calling on those with allotments to do a survey to see which kinds of helpful insects (such as pollinators) are crawling around your plot. Primary school-aged kids who carry out this 'Big Bug Hunt' can also stand to win a prize!

Find out more about the survey and how to take part at: https://www.nsalg.org.uk/news-events-campaigns/national-allotments-week/

Allotments are valuable to individuals and the community, as well as the environment. Growers take great pride in their upkeep and produce. Why not visit your local allotment to see what activities are happening during allotment week?
