Last ever Sunflower season now in full swing. They've seemingly gone out of fashion the last years, but still a great 'feature flower' in my opinion.

I was going to nip out the first buds, but how could I throw this one away! So, technicaly, Dahlia season has started.

Opening the same as last week.

Mon - Sat, 9-12, 2-4.
Sun, 10-12.

The sun brought a lot of flowers forward so there's now a super abundance. Alstroe will continue for months, as will the Statice. Stocks are in their penultimate week, whilst the Snaps also look like they're all coming at once. The Snaps are just fabulous, with the caveat that the heads are a little fragile and snap easily, but the highest quality stems that we're getting now won't be around long. In a few weeks we'll move to a different variety which has a more spread out flowering time, but doesn't have the same stem quality. The same goes for the side shoots of early croppers - numerous but thinner.

Beginning to get a sense of the Dahlia varieties, of which there's some real stunners. The lead flower has to be cut out as it's too short to be of use but it does show what's to come. I've picked the first Sunflower, and the Straw flower and Canterbury Bells are in bud. Maybe the big crops are coming to an end, but there's still going to be lots of variety through the summer.

Today's big ticket job was to plant another two rows of Asters, bringing the total to seven rows. Very likely too many, but in large part that will depend on over how long a period they flower. I'm hoping July to September, but we'll see. What I am interested to see is w**d level. These rows were sterilized in the Autumn, then Stock planted in March. Yesterday the last Stocks were pulled and today Asters planted. The question is wether a single round of sterlising will control w**ds for two crops. I'm really hoping so as the plan is to follow all the Stock, Snap and Odds and ends rows with Ranuncs, and it will save a lot of time and Diesel if I can get away without steaming again.

Growing News

Finally lots of flowers, not just numbers but also choice. Alstroe are still at their peak, Stock too, Snaps started today and will be effectively limitless for a month, the Statice have taken off and the odds and ends have joined the party a month ahead of the plan. Whilst it's always a little concerning when there's this much, it's lovely to see the Stock and Snaps better than I've ever seen them so in that regard it's a good problem to have.

I'm now going to give an update on progress of the odds and ends, in part if anyone is interested, but also to a future me to inform him what to plant and when next year.

Dahlia - just stunning! I'm so excited to see them and can't wait to get picking. I think the lead flower will have to get pinched out, but it's just a matter of a week or two before picking of the first few varieties will start.

Zinnia. The Oregon variety flowered first and whilst I'm selling them as Posies 8/bunch, they are a bit small. In retrospect I should have taken out the lead bud and let them grow bigger first. It's now a week since they started and I've picked the first two bunches of the other variety, Benarys Giants. What a difference, they are stunning. So much bigger and the week or two later is a benefit. To early to tell which is more prolific. There were some aphids early on but the bio control I added seems to have controlled it quickly.

Cosmos. So far the varieties that have flowered have underwhelmed. Velouette and Candystripe are too small to be much use so I'm pulling them out to give more space to the other more promising varieties. Sea Shells, Dazzler and Sensation are all much bigger plants and have so far just produced a lead flower which will have to be nipped out.. Certainly they show promise.

Grasses. Really fiddly to pick so I'm now just pulling the plants out as is. So far they've gone either in Bouquet or to florists, but I have so much choice I'm inclined to sell all I can to florists who are better able to use them.

Calendula. Gorgeous but really slow to pick/pack so I'm also pulling these rather than using them as a cut and come again. It's another one where the first bud has to be pinched out which adds an extra job, and they flower when I have plenty of flowers. On the plus side they are very pretty and are cheap and easy to grow.

Bells of Ireland. Now ready to start picking and looking amazing. The plants are huge and can be picked repeatedly I believe. I love the smell too, the potential downside is that few people know them so may be a struggle to sell. They'll work well in the Bouquet I'm sure.

Amaranthus (Bleeding heart). I've picked a few stems, but I think I can leave them a while to get a much more impressive trail.

Helichrysum (Straw flowers). Buds are forming but hopefully they'll wait a while.

Blue Salvia. Also showing a few buds, but will be at least a month till they're ready to pick.

No doubt I forgot some but this is most of them. You'll be seeing much more of them in BQ or in bunches of their own.

Open;
Mon to Sat, 10am -12noon and 2 - 4pm
Sun, 10am - 12noon

Plenty of Stock, Alstroe and Sweet William with also a few Statice, Foxgloves and Amarylis.

So, a relaxed day today in advance of what I hope will be a very busy month. In theory there'll be as many as two thousand bunches of Stock over the next month, and within a few weeks the Snaps will start with also 2k bunches and only a slightly longer season. For that reason I'm going to try opening Sunday mornings. Next weekend will be the trial and if it's a success I'll continue till Stock season ends a month later.

This week I sowed the last Asters which will get planted where the first Stocks are currently. That will then give 7rows of Asters which should flower from July till September, or so I hope. Although there's a lot of experimental bits and pieces for the summer, after the Snaps there's only two crops left which promise large scale production this year and that's Asters and Xanths. Alstroe will of course continue, as will Statice, and I'm hoping for decent numbers of Dahlia and Zinnia.

As always some photos attached to give a flavour of what's on the go.
