And that’s the 18th-century French oak sideboard finally finished!

The final piece of the puzzle was getting the original 18th-century lock working again. A big thank you to Mid Beds Locksmiths, who’ve managed to make a key to fit the original mechanism.

It’s fantastic to see a lock that’s over 200 years old working as it should, and even better that we’ve been able to preserve another original feature of this lovely piece.

After plenty of hours cleaning, restoring and bringing the oak back to life, the sideboard is now complete and available for sale at Hendles Hoard.

I’ve just picked up this pleated lampshade for my antique brass and enamel lamp, and I think it’s a perfect match!

The lamp itself dates to around 1890–1920 and was originally a decorative vessel before being converted into a table lamp.

It has some lovely colourful enamel decoration, and I’ve deliberately left the brass with its original aged patina.

Really pleased with how the two have come together.

this striking Art Deco pedestal desk has now been with me for about a week.

The figured top is the standout feature, with a bold book-matched grain, contrasted with the lighter figured timber and six recessed-handle drawers.

A really handsome 1930s desk with great proportions and plenty of character.

Nearly there.

This late 18th century French oak sideboard has now been cleaned back, bleached and waxed, while keeping all of its age and character.

The original 18th century central drawer lock is currently with the locksmith, with an antique key being cut to suit it. I’ve also sourced vintage replacement locks for the two cupboards.

A really lovely old piece with beautiful grain throughout.

Nearly there with this 18th-century French oak sideboard.

It’s now been cleaned, lightened and waxed, with the wooden k***s fitted. Just waiting on the replacement cupboard locks and an antique key for the central drawer.

I’ve tried to keep as much age and character as possible rather than over-restore it.

Approx. H115 × W158 × D53 cm.

Part one of two restoring this 18th-century French oak sideboard.

I’ve had this piece for a while now and had actually been using it as the counter in the shop, but I decided it deserved a proper restoration and, hopefully, a new home.

So far I’ve scraped back the old surface, cleaned and lightened the oak, washed it down, and repaired a split in the top with glue and clamps.

There’s still more to do — the hardware needs attention, replacement period locks are on the way for the cupboards, and the whole piece still needs to be waxed and finished.

It’s already starting to look like a completely different piece.

Part two will be the finishing touches and final reveal.

A proper little Georgian survivor.

Early 19th-century oak tilt-top tripod table, c.1800–1830, with a beautifully figured circular top, turned column and three sweeping legs.

Plenty of age, wear and character throughout, including old repairs and marks from more than 200 years of use.

A bit of a big decision for Hendles Hoard today.

For the first time since I started the business, I’ve made the decision to clear out some of the stock that’s simply been sitting around for too long.

Not all of it — but a selection of pieces that have become stagnant are heading off to auction.

It’s actually quite a brave decision for me. When you’ve spent your own money buying something, it’s very easy to keep thinking “it’ll sell eventually” rather than accept that sometimes you’re better off moving it on, freeing up the space and putting the money back into something else.

So, old stock out… and something new straight back in with this walnut desk.

I’ll keep you updated with how everything does at auction too — including what I originally paid, what it sells for, and whether I make a profit or take a loss.

Could be an interesting experiment. 😬

The hunt never stops… 👀

On the way to the dentist, I couldn’t resist popping into a few shops — and came across this beauty.

A great-looking desk with a beautiful walnut top and burr walnut sides, with loads of character and a really striking grain.

This one will be heading back to Hendles Hoard.
