You all know Harvey is The Boss around here, and he's the reason this page exists because what I make and sell benefits him, well, it is a Grandads job to treat his Grandkids, and he certainly deserves it.
If you have a read of this then you'll understand just one part of what he has been through and continues to go through everyday as well as his other complex needs, But he does it everyday with a cheeky smile and mischief in mind.
He's The Boss and he's also my Hero. ๐
Most people have never heard of Transposition of the Great Arteries.
But for TGA families these words define everything.
In a typical heart the aorta carries oxygen-rich blood out to the body.
The pulmonary artery carries oxygen-poor blood to the lungs.
In TGA โ
they are switched.
The aorta is connected to the wrong ventricle.
The pulmonary artery is connected to the wrong ventricle.
Oxygen-rich blood circulates back to the lungs.
Oxygen-poor blood circulates back to the body.
Two separate loops.
Going nowhere.
Sustaining nothing.
Without intervention โ
this is not survivable.
Most TGA babies are diagnosed prenatally or within the first hours of life.
Some are blue at birth.
Some crash without warning.
The first intervention is usually a procedure called a balloon atrial septostomy.
A catheter threaded into the heart.
A balloon inflated to create an opening between the chambers.
Allowing oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood to mix just enough to keep the baby alive until surgery.
Buying hours.
Buying days.
Buying time.
The arterial switch operation typically happens within the first two weeks of life.
Two weeks old.
Open heart surgery.
The aorta and pulmonary artery surgically switched back to where they belong.
It is one of the most complex cardiac surgeries performed on a newborn.
And it is the reason TGA babies survive.
But survival is not the end of the story.
TGA survivors face lifelong cardiac monitoring.
Coronary artery complications.
Arrhythmias.
Potential for additional surgeries as they grow.
These babies are not fixed.
They are rerouted.
Brave.
Carrying a heart that was built differently and fought anyway.
They deserve to be understood.
Their families deserve to be seen.
