𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤: 𝐒𝐨𝐰𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝 (𝑪𝒚𝒄𝒍𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒏 𝒉𝒆𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒇𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒖𝒎)

As autumn begins to settle in, few plants bring as much charm to the garden floor as Sowbread.

Known botanically as Cyclamen hederifolium, this hardy woodland perennial produces delicate pink or white flowers from late summer into autumn, often appearing before the foliage emerges. Once the flowers fade, attractive ivy-shaped leaves with beautiful silver marbling provide interest throughout the winter months.

Perfect for naturalising beneath trees and shrubs, Sowbread thrives in dappled shade and gradually forms wonderful colonies, creating a breath taking carpet of colour year after year.

Why we love it:

Delicate flowers when many other plants are fading
Beautiful marbled foliage that lasts through winter
Ideal for woodland and shaded garden settings
A valuable late-season nectar source for pollinators
Naturalises over time to create stunning displays

A wonderful reminder that some of the garden's most impressive plants aren't the biggest or boldest. Sometimes the real stars are found tucked away beneath the trees.

𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤: 𝐃𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐮𝐬 '𝐏𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐊𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬'

As it's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we've chosen the beautiful Dianthus 'Pink Kisses' as our Plant of the Week.

With its abundance of soft pink blooms, compact growth habit and sweet clove-like fragrance, this charming perennial is a wonderful addition to pots, containers and sunny borders. Flowering over a long period, it's a reliable way to add colour and interest throughout the season.

The delicate pink flowers make it a fitting choice for a month dedicated to raising awareness and supporting those affected by breast cancer.

Long flowering season
Beautiful fragrance
Perfect for pots and borders
A favourite with pollinators

Whether you're looking for inspiration for your own garden or simply appreciate beautiful plants, Dianthus 'Pink Kisses' is certainly one worth considering.

A small flower with a big impact.

𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤: 𝐉𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐩𝐥𝐞 (𝐀𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐦)

Few plants can rival the spectacular autumn display of the Japanese Maple.

Renowned for its elegant form and finely cut foliage, Acer palmatum transforms as the seasons change, with leaves turning brilliant shades of crimson, orange, gold and scarlet. Whether grown as a feature tree, within a border, or in a container, it brings a sense of beauty and tranquillity to any garden.

Even after the leaves have fallen, its graceful branching structure continues to provide year-round interest.

Why we love it:

Exceptional autumn colour
Beautiful foliage from spring to autumn
Perfect for small gardens and containers
Elegant architectural form
Creates a stunning seasonal focal point

Japanese Maples are proof that sometimes the most dramatic moments in the garden come just before winter arrives.

Because planting is what brings a garden to life.

While patios, paths and structures create the framework, it's the planting that adds colour, fragrance, texture and seasonal interest. It's what softens the edges, creates atmosphere and transforms a garden into a place you'll want to spend time in.

A well-designed planting scheme can frame a favourite reading spot, provide year-round interest from your window and create the sense of calm and escape that every great garden should offer.

That's why, as part of our "Every Great Story Needs a Beautiful Setting" festival offer, we're including a complimentary bespoke planting plan with every garden design package booked during the festival period.

Because every great garden deserves a carefully considered final chapter.

𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐲 𝐒𝐚𝐲𝐬...

"The best gardens are a bit like The Secret Garden... they reveal their magic slowly."

A hidden bench. A winding path. An archway leading somewhere unknown. The most memorable gardens aren't always the biggest or the most expensive. They're the ones that make you want to explore a little further.

That's the beauty of creating different spaces within a garden. Every corner can have its own character, purpose and sense of discovery.

As the Ilkley Literature Festival gets underway, Monty has found inspiration in one of the most loved garden stories ever written. After all, who doesn't love uncovering a secret garden?

The Secret Garden reminds us that the magic of a garden often comes from the planting. The colours, textures, fragrance and seasonal interest that transform a space throughout the year.

Tomorrow we'll be sharing a special Festival offer for anyone considering a garden design project..

For some, it's a comfortable chair and a good book. For others, it's fragrant planting, seasonal colour or simply a peaceful view.

Whatever your preference, the best reading gardens are designed to help you slow down, switch off and enjoy a moment of escape.

Which feature would be at the top of your list?

𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤: 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐞𝐥𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐲 (𝐀𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫)

Few plants signal the arrival of autumn quite like the Michaelmas Daisy.

Bursting into flower just as many summer favourites begin to fade, these cheerful daisy-like blooms provide a welcome splash of colour from late summer through to autumn. Available in shades of purple, pink, blue and white, Michaelmas Daisies are a brilliant way to extend the flowering season and bring life to borders when it's needed most.

Their nectar-rich flowers are also a valuable late-season food source for bees and other pollinators, making them as beneficial as they are beautiful.

Why we love it:

Masses of late-season colour
Loved by bees and pollinators
Perfect for cottage and naturalistic gardens
Excellent for cutting and bringing indoors
Keeps borders looking vibrant into autumn

Whether planted in large drifts or tucked amongst grasses and perennials, Michaelmas Daisies provide that much-needed burst of colour as the gardening year begins to wind down.
