What does competence really look like in practice?

FIS and CSCS have unveiled a draft Drylining Carding Journey – a clear example of how the industry can move beyond talking about competence and start demonstrating it through a recognised carding route.

Created in response to the Building Safety Act, the framework sets out the Skills, Knowledge, Experience and Behaviours (SKEB) required for drylining and highlights what future card application and renewal requirements could look like.

Key highlights:
✅ Clear, recognised routes into the occupation
✅ Qualifications and health & safety requirements
✅ Fire Safety training
✅ Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
✅ A blueprint other sectors can learn from

This is still a draft, so no action is needed from existing cardholders. But it offers an important glimpse into the future of competence, skills recognition and card renewals across construction.

Take a look at the case study and find out more here: https://www.thefis.org/2026/06/01/drylining-sector-route-to-competence/
