Herringbone floors are so stunning…

But they’re not for everyone!

I’d skip the herringbone if…

• You are tight on budget.

• You want your floor to play a supporting role, rather than being the star of the show.

• You love straight lines and uniformity.

• You want other patterns in the space, like a rug or upholstery but are nervous of layering patterns.

Are you team herringbone or straight lay?

Visit as many beautiful places as you can as part of your training this summer.

You don’t need a ton of cash! You can visit most hotels for a cup of coffee, and hotel lounges are often a great lesson in design. Especially in lighting, layering and mixing different pieces and styles of furniture.

When you visit beautiful spaces over time, you’ll start to spot patterns.

You’ll understand why certain spaces resonate with you, and that’s when decorating your own home becomes so much easier.

It’s a simple habit, but it can completely change the way you approach the design of your home.

I know, we’re so used to doing everything online now!!

But did you know it’s quicker and easier and much less boring to spend half a day visiting tile showrooms than to spend hours and hours hunched over your laptop ordering tiny samples?

If you’re renovating, get out there. Visit shops and showrooms because you will….

• Rule things out more quickly.
• Rule other things in!
• Benefit from the expertise of the people who work there.
• Make more real progress than scrolling until midnight!

I wrote about this in my newsletter recently, and one of my readers came back to me and said…

“My god. Why didn’t I do this sooner? I went to Mandarin Stone at the weekend and have now found the perfect floor tiles for my hallway!”

We don’t do it sooner because we think online is quicker. But it’s a trap. You’ll spend hours ordering samples, and then often be hugely disappointed when they arrive.

Drop a heart if you would love seeing tiles in real life.

Pale Kitchen Cabinets. It seems like the safe choice… but it can create a new problem.

Here’s what often happens:

You choose a light warm neutral for the cabinets.

Then you need enough contrast on the walls.

So you end up reaching for a much lighter, almost-white paint.

But in a north-facing or naturally darker kitchen, that white can look dull, dingy or slightly grubby.

The darker the room, the less I rely on very pale cabinetry.

Instead, consider:

• Deeper, darker, warm neutrals.

• Soft pinks, reds, greens or yellows.

You can then choose a pale neutral for your walls that provides enough contrast with your cabinets without becoming a stark white!
