On August 8, 1890, Bram Stoker wandered into a Whitby library and discovered an obscure book citing a character with which the town would ultimately become synonymous.

136 years later, we followed in Stoker's footsteps by making our own voyage of discovery to Whitby.

While less seismic, our finds also owe much to serendipity including an item procured from a white van man met in the street; a great piece liberated from a bad car boot sale; and a set of grave markers almost as dark as Dracula ๐Ÿง›โ€โ™‚๏ธ

Hereโ€™s a wonder you wonโ€™t be seeing in the Fable window ๐Ÿ‘€

Meet Johnny, named after John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester, to whom 1673's โ€œS***m The Quintessence of Debaucheryโ€ is attributed.

India Russell and Janine Douglas are the woods-women responsible for erecting this monstrosity which will make its stage debut at the Fringe from Friday. Nikita Matthewsโ€™ production of S***m is showing in Grand Theatre at theSpace @ Surgeons' Hall.

If you like your papier-mache less salacious, however, thereโ€™s always Ernie, our PG-friendly golfer, who can be seen in the Fable window 24/7.

A lotta pieces that find their way into Fable donโ€™t stay for long โ€“ art especially. For our followers from further afield, weโ€™re gonna start regularly highlighting new arrivals, starting with this rather fetching Dutch canvas.

Itโ€™s battered and bruised but thereโ€™s a lotta character to this winter scene by Louis W. Van Grest.
