Before I make the octopus wool sculpture, I have to learn how to really see the animal.

How do the octopus arms behave independently, yet still belong to one creature? How does the skin change colour with its surroundings? How does the octopus move without bones?

Before I choose the wool or pick up a needle, I begin to observe the animal and try to understand its behaviours and environment. Everything begins with observation. Follow along to watch how the octopus slowly starts to emerge.

The making of the octopus wool sculpture.

Before I choose the wool or pick up a needle I begin by observing the animal. How does the octopus move without bones? How do the eight arms behave independently, yet still belong to one creature? How do I begin to capture the octopus that can appear completely different from one moment to the next? This sculpture begins with research.

There is no single octopus colour - the animal I am studying shifts between flush pinks, deep mulberry, muted violets, pale creams and unexpected flashes of blue and gold. So I will choose small amounts of wool from my vintage haberdashery cabinet. I’ll blend the fibres, test the tones and allow for the pallet to evolve as the sculpture takes shape. The aim is not to find the perfect colour. It is to create a feeling of the surface that could change at any moment.

I don’t often share this level of detail outside of my subscription space… but this piece feels a little different.

As I’ve been working on this pangolin sculpture, it’s made me slow down and really think about the animal itself — so it felt right to open up more of my process here.

In this piece, I’m shaping the form and structure to create a more realistic pangolin claw

Alongside this, I also wanted to raise awareness for the work being done by David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation and their campaign Scales of Injustice: Pangolins in Peril.

I don’t usually do this… but this piece felt important to share.

Over the next couple of days I’ll be showing the making of this pangolin sculpture - and honestly, through creating it I’ve been learning more about the animal itself.

Pangolins are now the most trafficked mammal in the world, and all eight species are at risk of extinction. It’s something I hadn’t fully realised before, and it’s been hard to ignore.

So alongside sharing my process, I also wanted to raise awareness for the work being done by David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation and their campaign Scales of Injustice. Pangolins in Peril.

There’s a quiet charm to this little donkey.

Today, January 3rd, marks the Wolf Moon — the first full moon of the year. Traditionally, it symbolises strength, instinct, community, and the wild spirit of winter.

My little grey wolf sculpture feels especially fitting today. In this project, I’ve worked to capture the character, beauty, and quiet power of the wolf — using detailed needle felting techniques so makers can learn to create their own wild sculpture.

From facial shaping and fibre blending to realistic fur finishes, this piece is a wonderful way to start your creative year.

Day 11 – Christmas Wildlife Countdown

Today is all about pure magic… my handmade Flying Reindeer. This wool sculpture holds such nostalgic, life-like charm — the kind that brings back childhood wonder the moment you see it take shape.

I’ve poured so many different needle-felting techniques into this project, from sculpting expressive features to refining the wire armature for graceful movement. It’s one of those makes that stays close to the heart, which is why makers return to it year after year.
