One of the most common questions I get is “How do I substitute yarn in a pattern?”.

It's very easy - all you have to remember, is don't substitute on weight - do it on meters / yards.

Firstly, look at your pattern and find the total grams required for the size you want to make and the number of meters per ball required.

For example, you have a jumper which requires 3 balls of 100g acrylic DK yarn. But you want to knit it in a wool DK yarn. Wool weighs more than acrylic, so you can't do a straight substitution.

It's time for maths. Look at your pattern and the yarn suggested. If each of your 100g acrylic DK balls is 298m long and your pattern asks for 3 balls that means:

(Total grams ÷ grams per ball) × meters per ball = total meters needed.
(300g ÷ 100g) x 298m = 894m

Now, you need to work out how many balls of your new wool DK you'd need to make the same pattern. Say each ball of your wool DK is 225m per 100g.

So then you do some more maths:

Total meters needed ÷ meters per ball = number of balls needed

So in this case it would be:
894m ÷ 225m = 3.9 balls

Always round up the balls and, when in doubt, take an extra ball. Don't forget to do a gauge!

Buy metres not grams!

What We're Loving this Tuesday!

Hasn't it turned a bit chilly this week - the Ice Saints are doing their thing!
With this in mind, I have gone with knitting socks (you can always prepare for gifting in the winter months!)

I have used Adriafil Knitcol 100% Merino. I love the way you get the stripes and fairisle effect.

We have some beautiful colours in. Go on, give it a try! Knitting socks is super therapeutic and they are loved by young and old!
