Andy Henshaw has been working in the potteries for almost 50 years, honing his craft and creating models for 1882 for a very long time. These days he works with us in our factory as the master model maker, we spoke with him about the history of the ceramic industry and how it's changed throughout the years.

We've been floored by all the amazing new followers to our Instagram in the last few days, as well as all the love from our wonderful existing community!⁠

Because of all the new faces we thought we should re-introduce ourselves as we haven't done that in a while. We are 1882 Ltd. a 5th Generation run ceramic business in Stoke-on-Trent, the heart of the English Potteries. We have been crafting & collaborating on design driven ceramics for 15 years, from our wonderful Atelier pieces that almost defy the laws of both clay and physics, to beautifully designed everyday objects that can exist in whatever magical world you wish to put them! ⁠

Founded in 2011 by Emily Johnson, the mission was to create ceramics to be used, loved & desired with each collection having a different spirit. By working with a variety of leading British & international creative visionaries, each collection takes shape differently from the last, the golden thread being the incredible medium of clay.⁠

The Homo Faber show ends tomorrow, so today is your last day to discover Iris, our Stoneware Moon Jar created with Es Devlin for 'A Full Moon Rising'.

Iris, initially started as a hand thrown Moon Jar, is further sculpted by our master decorator Helen, who carves out the main aperture and forms the crescents by hand, smoothing in the raw clay with her hands and tools to create the final look. The Homo Faber installation, also curated by Es Devlin, features 42 variations on the Korean moon jar, a centuries-old functional vessel with an iconic moon-like silhouette that was used to transport and store water. To tie it all together, the incredible installation is set atop a pool, shimmering against the moon like structure and creating a dialogue between light and water. Set within Fondazione Giorgio Cini's former 1960s swimming pool, A Full Moon Rising highlights the beautiful simplicity of vessels used to transport and store water, such as the Korean moon jar (a centuries-old functional vessel with an iconic moon-like silhouette).

In the centre of the pool, a semi-circular structure displays a selection of moon jars and similar vases in watery colours, handcrafted in ceramics, paper, glass, metal and other materials by craft artists from around the world including our 1882 Ltd. x Es Devlin Iris Moon Jar. Evocatively lit and reflected in the shimmering water of the pool, this structure becomes a moon rising over the sea, creating a dialogue between light and water and showcasing the inspiration that master artisans take from both elements.

We are so thrilled to be a part of Homo Faber’s 2026 show with Es Devlin celebrating craft. The show, ‘An Island of Light' includes our stunning Iris vases, created in collaboration with Es Devlin , as part of the instalment ‘A Full Moon Rising’.

The Iris vases are created by several master potters. Initially starting as a hand thrown moon vase, our master decorator Helen then carves out the main aperture and forms the crescents by hand, smoothing in the raw clay with her hands and tools to create the final look. This beautiful, oversized vessel is then left unglazed to celebrate the textures of natural earthenware.

Dunes is a fine tableware collection featuring skillfully hand-crafted plates and bowls. Slip-cast from plaster models, the collection maximises Malouin’s beautifully minimalistic patterns through analogue 3D printing.

The analogue 3D printer made by Malouin, creates shapes that cannot be designed by hand or computer. Only movement, imperfection and randomised material deposition form the pieces. The shapes formed are carefully utilised and transformed into functional pieces, highlighting the skill of the craftsman and creating a collection that wonderfully exemplifies its title of — Dunes.

We are thrilled to share some fantastic news: 1882 Ltd. has received a 2026 Princess Royal Training Award.

This prestigious national award celebrates organisations that put learning and development at the heart of what they do and can show the real and lasting impact that investing in people makes. We are so honoured and proud to have received this recognition and it’s a testament to the passion, commitment and dedication of our people here at 1882 Ltd.

We also want to take a special moment to thank Catriona Cork, our Queen of everything who has put in an enormous amount of work and time toward developing our training programmes. So a huge thank you to her!

As well as Catriona, this is a success built by our people. The award recognises our programme ‘Generation 6’ which is an initiative created to support the ageing workforce in ceramics and solidifying the future of the industry with the next generation of talented ceramicists.

Together, we have created opportunities for learning, growth and development that have led to meaningful results for our colleagues, our organisation and our wider community.
