🚨 PLEASE READ 🚨 If new double glazing is misting up on the outside pane, that’s actually a good sign and shows the window is working efficiently.
Here’s why:
• Modern double or triple glazed units have much better insulation than older windows.
• The inner pane and the air/gas cavity reduce heat transfer from inside the house.
• On cold, clear mornings, the outer pane becomes colder than the surrounding air because very little heat is escaping from indoors.
• Moisture in the outside air then condenses on the external glass surface, creating mist or dew.
Think of it like dew forming on a car roof overnight. The glass surface has cooled enough for moisture to condense.
When is it normal?
✅ Condensation is on the outside face of the outer pane.
✅ It usually occurs:
• Early morning
• Autumn and winter
• Calm, clear nights
• North-facing or shaded elevations
✅ It normally disappears once the sun warms the glass.

🚨 We got the call… Condensation in the loft! 🚨
The cause? As you can see in the first image, the cavity wall insulation had spilled over at the eaves and completely blocked the soffit ventilation. This prevented fresh air from entering the loft space, meaning the roof could no longer breathe properly.
✅ We removed all the loose insulation that was blocking the ventilation path.
✅ We then installed Rockwool insulation from the top of the cavity and pushed it back into the loft space where it belongs.
✅ Finally, we fitted rafter trays to ensure a clear and continuous airflow from the soffit into the loft, allowing the roof to ventilate correctly.
Why is this important?
Persistent moisture and poor ventilation can lead to: ❌ Black mould growth ❌ Surface mildew ❌ Condensation issues ❌ Roof timber rot if moisture levels remain high over time
A simple issue at the eaves can cause major problems if left untreated, which is why proper ventilation is just as important as insulation.
