Uramasari Denim Worker Long Coat - Blue Asanoha Lining

Inspired by the construction of a lined kimono (awase), this Uramasari Denim Worker Long Coat combines heritage craftsmanship with modern durability. The outer shell is made from robust 9 oz denim—built to handle the daily grind and weekend escapes alike. Inside, the hakkake (lining) reveals a deep indigo base woven with silver or light-colored threads, forming the classic asanoha pattern.

The asanoha, or hemp-leaf motif, has been cherished in Japan for centuries as a symbol of resilience, vitality, and steady growth. Together, the tough denim exterior and symbolic lining create a piece that works as hard as you do—while carrying a story of tradition, strength, and style.

Uramasari Canvas Worker Long Coat - Blue Kikko Lining

Inspired by the awase—a lined kimono—this Uramasari Canvas Worker Long Coat blends durable workwear with the sophistication of traditional Japanese textiles. The outer shell is crafted from rugged dark navy canvas, while the hakkake (lining) features authentic Nishijinori.

The deep navy base is adorned with intricate geometric patterns, a hallmark of Japanese elegance, formality, and longevity. These repeating motifs often carry auspicious meanings—here, they may reference stylized Kikkō (tortoise shell), a symbol of long life and protection.

The result is a versatile coat that hides a layer of cultural heritage within, pairing hard-wearing utility with timeless artistry.

Uramasari White Worker Jacket - Red Ikat Kimono Lining

A meeting of workwear and wabi-sabi.
Inspired by Japan’s tradition of crafting beauty into everyday life, this Uramasari White Worker Jacket marries the resilience of a vintage worker coat with the quiet poetry of kimono lining. The outer shell is crisp, white denim—functional, straightforward, and enduring. Inside, a vibrant red kasuri (ikat) lining tells a deeper story.

In Japanese culture, red symbolizes strength, life force, and protection—often worn to ward off misfortune. The rhythmic, hand-dyed patterns of kasuri represent harmony in imperfection, echoing the philosophy of wabi-sabi, where irregularity and texture are celebrated as signs of life and authenticity.

When Kimono is white outside and red inside. They are most likely describing a lined kimono (awase) where the outer fabric is white and the lining (hakkake) is red.

This is more than a jacket—it’s a conversation between tradition and modern life. Wear it closed for clean, workwear minimalism, or open to reveal the striking inner lining—a hidden layer of meaning and artistry.

HANTEN Firefigher Jacket from Yachiyo

Firefighter’s jacket, known as a hikeshi-banten or hikeshi hanten, represents the strength and courage of Japan’s traditional fire brigades. Dating back to the Edo period and later, these garments were worn by local volunteer firemen (hikeshi), serving both as functional workwear and as a bold symbol of group pride and identity.

White Japanese characters line the front lapels, identifying the brigade and division leader

A vibrant red stripe across the shoulders adds visual strength, signaling authority and rank.

The back features a large circular insignia, a brigade crest that served as an instantly recognizable emblem during fire-fighting efforts.

Haori Kimono Samurai Story

This mid-20th-century example keeps that tradition alive — deep black silk, formalized with two kamon family crests. Inside, the hakkake lining hides a breathtaking secret: a hand-painted samurai standing in the rain, surrounded by poetic calligraphy.

In Japanese culture, such inner paintings were personal, revealing beauty only to those invited to look — a philosophy of hidden elegance (uramasari).

The haori has been part of Japanese dress since the 16th century, first worn by samurai over armor for warmth. By the Edo period (1603–1868), it became a refined jacket worn over kimono, symbolizing status and style.

We also have more beautiful haori waiting in our collection — come take a look and find your own story.
