We started with the layout and reviewed which furniture could be re-purposed elsewhere and where a piece could be given a new lease of life, we re-stained or painted it and fitted new hardware before moving it on to another room. We utilised an adjoining room to become a dressing room, ensuring the storage never had to compete with the bedroom itself.

Once we had settled the layout, we took our lead from the garden and sourced a hero print for the room. With its palette of indigo, cornflower blue, eau de nil, ochre and saffron we were able to successfully carry it across the furniture, soft furnishings and accessories and into the en suite beyond.

The title fits. Our clients have spent years shaping a garden that feeds them, fills the house with beautiful cut flowers, and gives them somewhere to catch the last of the evening light with a good book. Our instinct from the start was that every room should carry that same thread through the house, so the bedroom needed to feel like a continuation of the garden, not a departure from it. We brought the outside in and let that sense of harmony settle into the room, in colour, light and texture.

Our real value comes from being on a project from the very start, recruited alongside your architect and builder, not brought in once decisions have already been made.

That's what our Full Interior Design service is for: one studio holding the whole picture, from the first conversation about how you live, through to the layouts, materials, lighting and bespoke pieces, to the day your home is styled and ready to live in.

We coordinate with your contractors and tradespeople and take care of sourcing and procurement. Deliveries are scheduled to fit the wider project, so nothing arrives before it's needed, and nothing gets left to chance.

We're an SBID accredited studio, held to the same standard across every stage.

And we never will.

We do have a way of doing things though. No two homes are the same, and no two clients are either. We believe good design starts with the people. How they spend time together, how they entertain, what makes them feel comfortable, the atmosphere they want their home to have and the details that matter to them personally.

Often clients come to us when they've just purchased or they are stuck in a rut, they're not living their best life at home. Entertaining might mean one of them is stuck in the kitchen whilst everyone else enjoys themselves in the other room. The morning routine that never quite works, running late again. The house rule means the utility door must stay firmly shut for fear of a landslide. The answer isn't the colour everyone's painting their walls or the wallpaper that's all over Instagram right now.

It starts with getting the foundations right. The layout that puts you in the room where life is happening. The lighting is designed around how the space is actually used. The joinery that means everything is where you need it, when you need it.

Once that's right, we go looking for the story. The piece of artwork collected whilst travelling, the antique rug that's crossed continents, a favourite piece passed through generations, something they already own that carries enormous meaning. Those personal layers are what make a home feel deeply theirs.

Ten years in, that's still the thing I feel most strongly about. Homes should feel like the people living in them. Not like a version of somebody else's life imagined for them.

We asked our founder, Ann, to introduce herself properly.

The experience I bring to a project goes way back. It started at Habitat, working with property developers on furniture packages through the Leeds Canal-side redevelopment.

At Fenwick, as a buyer, I learned to manage large budgets and tight schedules, and how to negotiate fairly without losing a supplier's goodwill and I got good at curating considered collections for the store, not too dissimilar to curating finishes for a project, I still use these skills every time we design and procure FF&E for a client.

I began studying design in 2010, then moved to John Lewis, managing bespoke kitchens and bathrooms, before leading interior design at James Brindley, where I saw first hand how the right process affected the client experience.

The sharpest education has been real life, working on real projects over the last ten years, and building a team of craftsmen and specialists we can rely on.

When I'm not in the studio, you'll find me pottering in the kitchen or the garden, usually with a cook book planning the next get together. I also lose countless weekends to visiting National Trust properties. Plas Newydd is one of my favourites: Rex Whistler's mural in the dining room, and the original 1930's Sibyl Colefax bedroom. I notice something new in both, every time I visit.

At home, I'm already in full autumn and winter mode. My own guest room and home office are getting redecorated before the year's out. In the studio, we're already gearing up for the influx of smaller, one-room projects that help get our clients ready to celebrate Christmas with friends and family.

Some studios have a look you'd recognise anywhere. We don't, our intention isn't to apply an aesthetic, it's about noticing who you are and understanding what the best version of you looks like at home.

Keeping cool and comfortable in the summer

When you work with us, it's a given that we spend time with you thinking about how you want your home to feel. When the summer really turns up the heat, as this one has, 'feeling' comfortable and keeping cool is very much the focus.

We all love a before and after, don’t we? So here’s the dining room from our York cottage project.

There’s something special about looking back at our projects once they’ve had time to settle into themselves. Over the last decade we’ve been invited into people’s homes and lives to create spaces they’ll enjoy for years to come, and this English country cottage in York is one that really stays with me.

Like many North Yorkshire cottages, the character was already there in abundance. Our role was never to overpower it, only to help the house feel softer, calmer and more connected to the way the clients wanted to live day to day.

The projects I enjoy most are often the ones where the finished rooms don’t look newly designed at all. They feel as though they’ve always belonged to the house, simply settling in over time.

Working on period properties across Yorkshire reminds me that good interior design is rarely about imposing a style. It’s about understanding the building first, then shaping rooms that support modern life within it.

As we approach ten years of Middlethorpe Interiors, I have found myself reflecting on how much the studio has grown: in the way we work, the homes we are drawn to, and the conversations we now have with clients. More often than not, people come to us wanting their homes to feel calmer, more comfortable and more reflective of how they really live.

That shift was a large part of the reason behind our rebrand last year. By then the studio had matured. Clients were involving us much earlier, in renovations, layouts and the whole direction of a home rather than decoration at the end. The work had become more layered, more architectural and more rooted in how people actually want to live.

Working with Wildings Studio gave us the chance to step back and understand what the studio had become after nearly a decade. They saw straight away that this was never about reinventing ourselves or following trends. It was about reflecting the feeling clients already had when they worked with us: thoughtful, personal and considered from the very first conversation.

Looking back, the rebrand gave us greater confidence in who we are and the homes we most love creating. Warm, layered homes made for real life, comfort and longevity.

One of the things people often say when they first contact us is:
“I’m not actually sure what kind of help I need.”

Sometimes they are planning a full renovation - they already have builders involved and suddenly realise they need help making decisions before everything starts moving too quickly and sometimes it's just one room that's never felt quite right.

Very often, people sit somewhere in between. They know they want their home to feel better, more cohesive, comfortable to live in and reflective of their personalities and lifestyle.

But they are unsure whether they need full interior design, help refining a scheme, guidance with colours and finishes, or simply somebody experienced to sense-check decisions before they commit to them.

That is exactly why we offer several ways of working.

Some clients work with us across an entire house renovation from the earliest planning stages. Others come to us for Virtual Design, Design Concierge or Colour Consultancy for support with a more focused part of a project.
