🎃🦔 Annual Halloween Hedgehog Reminder!!

We searched our archive for a hoggle snap, there are hundreds, from summer nights watching and listening to them eat, drink, chuff and pur. Alongside the not so happy images of strimmer injuries, fly strike, deliberate spraying, flea infestations and images of them on our delivery to our rescue as well as the exciting release images we always send back to our rescue to show them heading out to explore.

Recently we were told by someone who has visited our local amazing rescue and rehab, we have saved in excess of 20 hedgehogs over the last 6 years, since our first ever release on Halloween of 2020. This is either from our own garden, local posts or those who know us as being a little hedgehog obsessed and reaching out to us for help. The best ones have to be the Wild Bloomers school "Danielle the children are fine, but" we know what comes after the but 💕.

The important part - PUMPKINS CAN CAUSE DIARRHEA in our prickly friends, at a time when it is vital for them to gain that all important weight for hibernation. Please be mindful of where you put your pumpkins, and DO NOT discard them in your local parks or forests like the yearly viral post. This is dangerous for wildlife.

What can you do? As long as no chemicals, bleaches or rot and mould are present - compost them or find a local rescue that can use them for animal feed!

The snap of choice this year, a cheeky hedgehog from 2021, that came here for release, and had chewed its way out of its original box and had to be checked on in intervals as they had been collected in the morning, for evening release.

Thanks to memories, it has reminded Mrs Wild with this treasure, it has been 3 years since she ruined the ceiling above the dining table making magic for the Wild Bloomers 🙈 those sticky hooks were a bit TOO sticky!! But it was fun using real foliage and creating magic they still remember now!

Chrysanths 2025/2026 at the same time (thanks memories) we knew they were not the giants they are this year, last year - but cannot put our finger on what we have done differently. The weather is likely the culprit?

Twice the height, hitting the roof, putting the Wonky in W&WB 🙈. Which is frustrating. The alstro are also having another big push!

Ranunculus - total diva, totally gorgeous.
Potting up the ranunc this morning to give them the best root systems, growth and chance against 🐁🐭 attacks. These are a yummy treat for them; not so good for us!

These are a love hate crop for us. Not too dry, not too wet, protected from rodents and frosts. 2024 we had an incredible crop of ranunc which clearly gave us a false sense of security. 2025 was not as great but still productive. 2026 saw us battle serious fungas gnat infestations brought in with the compost and we lost a lot due to this and rodents. Here's to the 2027 ranunc crop 🎉 🤞. Dare we say, so far, so good!

Cutting early this morning for a special order tomorrow, the sun caught the flowers beautifully. From a distance the dahlia beds are now, finally, breath taking. But close up not so much now the season is not only drawing to a close, but the toll the weather has taken.

Then a quick wander around RC with Mrs Wild's sister and youngest nephew to ooh, ahh, and of course, moan, about the year we have had, the weeds that seem to grow too fast and how the field has struggled which is very much evidenced. But it was nice to show them around and how much things have changed since they last saw it in person!

Home to process and condition the beautiful buckets of blooms and foliage to ensure they are thoroughly hydrated for tomorrow morning.

Mrs Wild has spent the last 2 days pricking out and potting on seedlings. The poly tunnel bench is almost full as is the greenhouse and we still have sweet peas to sow soon! (Tunnel snapshot in stories).

The grasses alongside the wildlife pond have grown massively, these will need dividing next season! A little flat this morning with the weight of the dew overnight.

Pinching a pic from our friend who we hosted the Breast Cancer Now fundraising day with today, as it was so busy we didn't manage to lift our phone once!

New items by us this year; dried flower designed photo frames, munchkin pumpkins with dried flowers (not carved so will last ages!) and the return of our witches brooms with this years dried blooms among other items. We will post some pictures this week for anyone who may be interested to collect from HQ.

Thank you to all our fellow stall holders, old and new, and to everyone who came out to support us all as well as the charity.

Today's antics. First task of the day before we got grubby - baking for the school bake sale, if you also have a multi allergy babe like us, a well known box brand and some fizzy does the trick! Egg and dairy free 🥳 and only contains soya lecithins if your CMPA child also struggles with soya proteins like ours. As per the box may contain nut.

Whilst we were at it, more homemade fresh bread rolls for the Wild Bloomers homemade bread addiction. Our eldest has told Mrs Wild over the summer she has become "very bakey" 🤣. While waiting for them to bake we threw some dead headed dahlia into our favourite cream jug vase to brighten up the kitchen, they won't give us long, but will give some short lived cheer before heading to the compost!

Once the oven was off, onto sorting the greenhouse, outdoor shelving and table. Perennials, propogated and seed sown and biennials were loaded up and taken to RC to pop in the tunnel, we will do another trip over the weekend. This freed up another shelving to whip into the greenhouse for the ever growing stock of hardy annual and perennial seedlings and ranunculus. Soon to be added will be sweet peas once we get them sown.

Surprisingly all in good time, we then managed to clear more tunnel beds quickly before collecting the Wild Bloomers from school and having a brief wander and assess.

All that remains in the tunnel beds are our chrysanthemum, alstro, some basil, a mess we need to tidy, uh hum, a mouse or two that keep digging the alstro, and some spindly snaps still flowering - left for the 🐝.

The chrysanths are over a foot taller than last year?! We have had to tie blue rope to the crop bars to hold the tops up, but they're still a little....wonky. We will move these next year to the beds infront and make a better support system, we didn't have this problem last Autumn 🫣. We also have some alstromeria which will stay put and propogations planted in next year once the chrysanths are moved!
