Before and after remedial work from the longcase clock in my last post.

1) The hex nut fitted to the plate has been removed and a new bit of brass fitted and blended in as best as possible.

2) The second wheel pivot brought back to a more secure size.

3) The escape wheel quick pivot (which required the previous ‘repairer’ to fit the nut to extend the plate) removed and a proper pivot fitted.

Now onto final burnishing of pivots and pivot holes before assembly.

Going through a spate of clients who have come to me after someone else tried to repair it first. I knew who this was by their craftsmanship before they were named.

First photo is how it was left, with mainspring faces that overhang and fall short and soft solder all over the place.

Second photo is how I’m leaving it.

I recently had the pleasure of restoring this astronomical clock made by Caleb Boney, a clockmaker from Padstow. ⁣

The clock is a design by James Ferguson featured in his book ‘Select Mechanics…’⁣
⁣
It shows the time, the transition of the sun over head, the moon phase and the age of the moon in its lunar month. It displays the calendar and zodiac calendar, as well as the stars visible overhead. ⁣
⁣
The clock came to me needing a service and was found to have been put back together incorrectly by the last repairer. ⁣
⁣
Caleb Boney is known to have made two of these, but was also known for his musical clocks which played a range of chimes.

Nice carriage clock cased up this morning.

Came in very dusty due to a broken top glass which has now been replaced.

A very nice 30hr Longcase Clock, made by Joseph Pedlar of Withiel (c. 1770), now on test.

The clock has taken a lot of work to get it here.

There are two things that makes this clock special; firstly the rack and snail striking is not unheard of but quite rare for a 30hr clock, especially one made by a Cornish maker, and this appear to be because the clock is designed to have a repeat mechanism and secondly this is a clock that still remains in the family of Joseph Pedlar.

This is a French clock movement I had in for restoration.

It required a service to get it running and additionally my client wanted the screws polished and re-blued back to original as they had faded and suffered in the past at the screwdrivers of sloppier repairers.

I've not posted on here in while as I've been too busy to really worry about Facebook posts, but thought I would just share a few of the jobs I've done in the last few months.

First we have a mid 19th Century longcase clock that came in for a service, and was suffering a broken pivot. (1. Shows the clock before working on, 2. the broken pivot, 3. the new pivot I made, and 4. the clock on test)

Just completed the service of this 19th century 8 day longcase clock.
