24 August is Ukrainian Independence Day.

On 24 August 1991, the parliament of Soviet Ukraine declared that the republic was leaving the crumbling Soviet Union to be an independent, self-governing state. On 1 December 1991, a referendum overwhelmingly confirmed this declaration with Ukrainians voting 92.3% in favour of independence. The early years of the new nation-state were a time of uncertainty but also of joy and relief. After hundreds of years of oppression and exploitation by Russia, Ukrainians felt like things were finally as they should be...

Meanwhile in Russia, not everyone was happy that Ukraine, with its abundant natural resources, fertile farmland, ports and beaches was breaking free. In 2014 Russia invaded, seized Crimea and set up puppet states in eastern Ukraine. This year, on 24 February, Putin sent another invading army, which marched on Kyiv, in a direct assault on the nation's independence. Ukraine continues to defend its right to exist and continues to need the world's support.

You can help make a difference. If you would like a print of Mary Shepperson's portrait of Volodomir Zelensky, donate to British-Ukrainian Aid who provide medical support to victims of the war via artprintsforukraine.myshopify.com (of your £30, £3 covers P&P and £27 goes to British-Ukrainian Aid). Or if you prefer, donate directly at https://british-ukrainianaid.org
Thanks for reading and hope you enjoy a peaceful and independent day 🌻 🕊 🇺🇦

Call me naive, but when we started this fundraising project I wasn't expecting to have to deal with quite so much ill-informed nonsense about Zelensky being a N**i 🫤 I think a lot of it's coming from trolls who just like to wind people up, but for those who are interested in a more balanced view, this is quite a good article: https://jewishunpacked.com/can-ukraine-have-a-nazi-problem-with-a-jewish-president/
