Hand painted contemporary cushions made in Northumberland by creative couple James Spencer and Philippa Wild - Spencer and Wild

Our process is all about team work. The fabric for each piece is painted first by James, then Philippa transforms the painted fabric on the sewing machine into the complete cushion. Our hand painted designs are created using techniques similar to those used in watercolour painting. James mixes diluted batches of colour and applies them to the fabric in a manner which allows the paint to bleed and merge into interesting combinations of textures and gradients. Whilst James focuses on the art adorning the cushions Philippa puts to use the sewing skills taught to her by two generations of family seamstresses. She fixes the zip into the backing fabric before carefully pinning and then sewing it onto the painted design. Finally a ‘super microfibre’ insert is put into the cover and voila! The cushion is finished and ready for a new home.
