These are not really family sized unless you’re a family of two. They’re for a picnic à deux, an intimate, impromptu, informal, alfresco or in the car meal of grand or humble means, idling in the evening sun. I’m excited for beach dinners of fish and chips or a cycle to unknown fields with a bag of simple goodies and a thermos holding enough for a cuppa. It sounds idyllic but realistically it’s a cut price adventure. Currently limbering up for all those bike rides when the wind eventually dies down 😳

How glorious is this water jug in dove grey? In mint condition, it’s lovely and weighty with gorgeous curves and a generous pouring spout. The lovely wide opening is perfect for using as a vase and this neutral tone is perfect for any number of interiors. The handle is comfortable and really I wonder if I can keep it myself…

Chairs are our weakness. There are even more tiny chairs lurking in the barn! This child’s bentwood chair from circa late 1800’s/early 1900’s, needs a new seat and a light clean to bring out the golden colour of the wood but otherwise, it’s in a solid condition. That’s good news for our repairman (I mean, Gregg…)

For the days when it’s brass monkeys in the barn, I do something warmer. I’m embroidering these vintage pre-printed linens in a different palette than they might traditionally been sewn in. More often embroidered linens are brightly coloured and perhaps don’t sit well in our modern interiors. Using muted tones, I’m hoping to give these a modern feel. Since I have no instructions for these, it’s fun remembering stitches which I can use to stitch in the lines.

I have a thing for wooden ladders. This beautiful old worn one is a really good height, well used and so sturdy. Made from a golden pine which glows in the evening sun and comes shining through the paint sploshes after a good clean. Fixing and cleaning continues a pace with re-rushing a pair of chairs which have lost their seats! Wish us luck!

The trick of fixing something well is to strip it right back so you can see the root of the problem. From broken furniture to erm…the state of our walls in the house. Eek. Taking off wallpaper is super satisfying but behind each lining paper is a potential nightmare. Amongst the delights, we’ve found two random doorways, a hole which had been papered over on both sides and shocking plastering. If it didn’t crumble as soon as you breathed on it, I wouldn’t mind keeping it like this. We’re not a fan of the new and pristine. (We own a Springer! He doesn’t care for fancy!)

These bouquets in their glorious pressed glass vases are my go to for a cheap and cheerful display. Seed heads and dried grasses picked from waste ground in the garden make an ethereal display in the long vase. The punchy pink roses were in the reduced bucket at the supermarket (my garden has very little in the way of flowers at the moment). I cut them short so they bunch together easily and popped some heather stalks between the flowers to add interest. The glass vases beautifully reflect the light and we need all we can get in time for Spring.

Something very sensuous about the shape of this hook. Nothing more needed than a firm wire brush to get rid of the rust flakes and it’s ready to hang, inside or outside. Hook measures 7” x 10”.

Welcome friends to our new endeavour! With no professional experience at all and a barn, we’ve decided we can’t possibly use all the furniture we keep finding in various states of damage and upcycling mishaps. Armed with little more than a wire brush and some wood glue, we’re determined that we can clean and repair deserving, unloved pieces and make them desirable again, while keeping us out of trouble and avoiding doing any DIY on our own house….opening our barn doors soon for a pop-up in our yard when the weather is a little more reliable! Come visit!!
