Antique Victorian Taxidermy Puffer Fish Blowfish Natural History Specimen Curio

A wonderful and highly unusual antique taxidermy pufferfish or blowfish, believed to date to the late Victorian or early 20th-century period.

Wilkinson Oriflamme Art Pottery Pair Vases John Butler Flambe Glaze C1900

A superb and highly decorative pair of antique Wilkinson’s Oriflamme art pottery vases, associated with designer John Butler, dating to the early 20th century, circa 1900–1920.

These wonderful vases feature beautifully rounded, almost spherical bodies with short narrow necks and slightly flared rims, creating an elegant and distinctive Arts & Crafts / Art Nouveau form.

Both vases are decorated in the spectacular Oriflamme flambé-style glaze, displaying a remarkable combination of rich crimson red, deep purple, aubergine, golden amber, orange and subtle green tones.

The wonderfully expressive glazes create striking cosmic, nebular and almost volcanic effects, with flowing streaks of colour resembling lightning, distant galaxies and atmospheric landscapes.

Each vase has its own individual glaze pattern, making the pair particularly attractive when displayed together. The rich, glossy surfaces and dramatic colour variations are characteristic of the highly decorative Oriflamme pottery associated with Wilkinson’s Royal Staffordshire Pottery.

The undersides bear the Wilkinson’s Royal Staffordshire Pottery Oriflamme backstamp, together with additional impressed or painted marks, as shown in the photographs.

These distinctive Oriflamme glazes were developed during the early 20th century and are admired for their rich colouring and unusual experimental decorative effects.

A particularly attractive and collectible pair of British antique art pottery vases, combining beautiful form with spectacular glaze decoration.

About the Glasgow Girls:
The Glasgow Girls were a loosely connected group of women artists and designers active in and around Glasgow at the turn of the twentieth century. The term was later coined in 1968 by William Buchanan to describe the female counterparts of the better-known Glasgow Boys. Rather than being a single movement, the Glasgow Girls worked across a wide range of disciplines and styles, often independently, yet were united by shared experiences and mutual support.

Artists associated with the Glasgow Girls include Jessie Marion King, Margaret and Frances Macdonald, Bessie MacNicol, Annie French, Helen Paxton Brown, and Stansmore Dean, among others. Their work is now highly regarded for its originality, craftsmanship and contribution to the Arts & Crafts movement in Scotland.

Pre Columbian Style Peruvian Moche Chimu Pottery Seated Figure Effigy Vessel

A fascinating and unusual Peruvian / Andean style pottery effigy vessel, modelled as a seated human or monkey-like figure with an integral tall spout and handle rising behind the head.

The figure has wonderful primitive character, with large rounded ears, narrow incised eyes, prominent nose and mouth, folded arms and strongly modelled seated legs. The vessel has an attractive reddish-brown surface with darker mottled areas and considerable natural-looking surface wear and patination.

The form and modelling show similarities to Pre-Columbian South American pottery, particularly anthropomorphic and zoomorphic vessels associated with the Moche / Mochica and Chimú cultures of ancient Peru. Comparable ancient Peruvian vessels are known depicting seated human and monkey-like figures with integral handles and spouts.

Origin: Peruvian / South American style
Culture/Style: Moche / Mochica / Chimú
Material: Terracotta / earthenware pottery
Subject: Seated human or monkey-like figure
Height: Approximately 19.5 cm
Age: Unknown – possibly old, but unconfirmed

Condition:
Good overall condition and displays wonderfully. There is considerable age-related surface wear, rubbing, deposits, abrasions and small imperfections throughout, as shown. These give the piece a particularly attractive aged appearance.

There are no guarantees regarding the precise age or cultural attribution of the vessel. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description and condition report.

A highly unusual and decorative piece of South American / Peruvian style pottery, and an interesting example for collectors of tribal, ethnographic and Pre-Columbian style art.

The elaborate deep pink porcelain case features extensive gilt Rococo scrollwork, pierced lattice decoration and scrolling feet. It is lavishly encrusted with individually modelled and hand-painted flowers, roses, foliage and smaller blossoms, surmounted by a wonderfully colourful applied exotic bird.

The 2.75-inch gilt dial features Roman numerals, engine-turned decoration and blued-steel moon hands.

The French movement is stamped with the maker’s mark and “Médaille d’Or”, supporting its quality and period manufacture.

A beautiful and highly decorative antique Royal Worcester porcelain vase, dating to circa 1909, finely hand painted with pink and yellow roses and bearing an intriguing artist’s signature to the body.

The porcelain is beautifully decorated with large deep pink and golden yellow roses, together with further rosebuds, foliage and delicate botanical details extending around the body. The flowers are exceptionally well painted, with wonderfully soft shading and rich colour against a typical Royal Worcester graduated ground of cream, blush pink, yellow, green and subtle brown tones.

The neck and foot are finished with attractive gilt detailing, including a broad gilded rim and further gilt bands, providing a lovely contrast against the softly coloured porcelain.
