Bijou Portrait of a Gentleman 🎨

A wonderfully characterful oil portrait of a gentleman, painted with expressive, loose brushwork and a fantastic use of colour.

The chap in question ,dressed in a dark cap, rich burgundy neckerchief and teal green coat, has an incredible presence. I particularly love the detail to his face and the warm, earthy palette throughout.

Painted directly onto board, with signs of age and wear that only add to its authentic antique character. A wonderfully atmospheric piece for a country house, farmhouse or collector’s interior.

A proper old character .. the sort of piece that draws you in for just a moment and makes you wonder who he was and what stories he could tell.

I’m working through so much Art at the moment and there will be a plethora of works hitting the grid so please do keep an eye on the feed and the website.

A Galvanised Steel Riveted Coffee Table

Constructed from a period, riveted water tank with a wonderfully weathered and worn finish.

The substantial top is surrounded by rows of domed rivets, continuing down the sides and around the distinctive arched leg openings.

The galvanised surface has developed a beautiful mottled patina with areas of oxidisation, staining and wear, giving authentic industrial character.

A particularly unusual and sculptural piece that would sit equally well in a country house, farmhouse, industrial or contemporary interior.

A fantastic statement coffee table with plenty of character and age.

Purchased from a private Wiltshire Country Estate over the weekend.

I simply could not resist this Antique Victorian Pine Twin Pedestal Kneehole Desk.

Circa 1850-1860

This has been a work space staple for generations for this particular family within a prominent country pile in the Wiltshire Downs.

Packed with character , an abundance of charm and offered in untouched, beautifully time worn original condition.

The desk has a substantial break front top with rounded moulded edge, two four-drawer pedestals , central full length drawer and kneehole. All of which is raised upon a substantial plinth base jointed by corner dovetails which are exceptional.

The drawers retain their aged turned wooden k***s, which have developed a fantastic deep, distressed patina through years of use and a multitude of paint finishes over the last century.

The surface is covered in honest age related wear, scratches, knocks and scrapes all testament to an honest life giving the piece authentic country house character rather than the artificially distressed appearance of a modern reproduction.

Particularly appealing are the four brass castors to the underside of the desk. An interesting practical detail ensuring ease of manoeuvre throughout the home as room configurations evolved over the years.

This Mingei Style example is exquisitely carved, with hand chiselled overlapping clamshell feathering, decorated in aged polychrome lacquer, including red, green, gold and silver tones.

The extensive natural wear and losses to the lacquer reveal the layers beneath and give the piece an exceptionally appealing, timeworn surface.

A French Portrait of a Gentleman.

Attributed to Alfred Aberdam.

This striking oil portrait of a gentleman in profile has been executed in a wonderfully expressive manner.

The works is offered on canvas and retains its original French 8F Lefranc & Cie canvas markings to the reverse.

Alfred Aberdam (1894–1963), was a Polish-born painter associated with the École de Paris. Aberdam was known for portraits, figurative compositions and expressive use of colour and paint.

The combination of the painting’s style, dimensions and surviving French canvas markings makes this a particularly fascinating discovery.

🖼️

J.F. Whittemore – “Reflection”, 1968

A wonderfully atmospheric 1968 oil painting by J.F. Whittemore, depicting a n**e female figure at a dressing table, viewed from behind, with her reflection captured in the mirror.

Painted in a beautifully restrained palette of soft greys, warm ochres, earthy browns and flesh tones, the work has a distinctly mid-century British figurative feel, with expressive brushwork and a subtle sense of intimacy.

The painting is signed and dated lower left, J.F. Whittemore 1968.

What makes this example particularly interesting is the original exhibition label to the reverse, recording that Reflection was exhibited at the East of England Show Art Exhibition, 16–18 July 1968, as Exhibit No. 74. The label records the artist as Whittemore J., the medium as oil, and states that the work was handed in at Mander College, Bedford.

An intriguing piece of 1960s British art history, retaining its original exhibition provenance.

📐 Framed and ready to hang.

A welcome addition to the inventory this September.
