Errigal, County Donegal.

This acrylic on canvas painting displaying the iconic peak of Mount Errigal in County Donegal. A layered technique is used to emphasize the mountain’s rugged, scree-covered slopes, contrasting the cool purples and greys of the peak against a warm, earthy foreground. Nestled at the base are traditional white-washed cottages with red doors, a quintessential Donegal scene anchoring the vast landscape with a sense of quiet, rural life.”

Bran

Following on from the painting of Sansa this was a follow up request for a pet portrait in the same style. This family’s pet Cockapoo has also been painted in watercolour and acrylic .

The challenge with painting this colour of dog is to find striking colours that complement the natural fur colour. I felt that incorporating black, purple and blue would create a more pleasing piece than black, grey and white.
I think the result is a contemporary piece that will appeal to the viewer.

Although Bran is, like Sansa a character name from Game of Thrones, this is just a coincidence. That’s not why the owner chose the name. There is a famous series of children’s books about Spot the Dog....the Irish language equivalent to Spot is Bran and this is where the name came from.

Sansa

This painting was requested by friend. The family’s pet Cocker Spaniel has been painted in watercolour and acrylic .

As with all portraits, the quality of the images initially provided are an important part of achieving a painting that captures character.

The combination of mediums allowed me to create a contemporary piece.

The accompanying music was chosen by the the family. Some of you will recognise why.

I have posted many styles of artwork on this page but perhaps a noticeable exception is portraiture, so....I took a class with the excellent Natasha Barr to gain an insight into the approach from an expert.

Some suggested that choosing a family member to paint could add a little unnecessary extra pressure but I liked the idea of trying to capture an image of a face I know so well.

The portrait is painted in oils and I really enjoyed the process. I also found that my advisors were right! There was an underlying pressure to get it right.

I won’t show a photo of the subject but some of you will know him and of course you will have your own opinions on how it has turned out.

By Order of....

This is a watercolour that painting I undertook in a class with talented artist George Gourley. His original painting “Tea is on the Table” is well worth checking out.

I added some digital media touches, post production. The idea of mixing and matching methods definitely holds some appeal for me.

The title chosen might resonate with some of you ! No written clues other than to say it is what the image invokes in my imagination.

I know it was one of you !

A painting of 4 geese in acrylics on canvas board.
A little artistic license was used in relation to the colours to give the image more impact against the muted smoky colours of the background.

Mountains and Lake, Connemara.

This is a version of the Paul Henry painting from the 1930s. It is a study in muted colouring that I have done as a practice piece in acrylic paints.

If you are of the inclination you could search online to see how close I got to the atmosphere of the original...No zooming !!

Two.........so far.

A still life using acrylic paints. I painted this for my Dad and it references a number of his favourite things. The book titles are Saffons and Glens of Antrim ...nods to his home area and his enjoyment of reading. The Famous Grouse is his preferred whiskey and his daily newspaper is The Irish News. The headline references an All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship win by his club Loughgiel Shamrocks...one of their two wins...thus the name of the painting!
