This week I’m focusing on creating Indian ink paintings for my upcoming solo exhibition in December (opens five weeks today!).
These paintings have been a few months in the making.
The ideas began with sketches in my notebook on a long train journey from Scotland to London back in August (image 2). I developed them into small compositions, all inspired by my large graphite drawing of the moon seen through a window (image 3).
But finding the right material proved much harder than expected!
I tried graphite (image 4), then acrylic and two different types of Indian ink (image 5). Nothing quite worked. The acrylic looked too blue, the ink too patchy. I even tried making collages from ink-painted paper, without much success 🫠
Eventually, after a lot of experimenting, I found a way of working with Indian ink that I really enjoy. But thought I’d share some photos all the failed experiments along the way!
I’m really excited to see how this new series develops over the coming week, and to share the finished paintings in December!
