Quiet moments. Quiet intentions. Quiet homes.
“Quiet” has been added to everything lately, luxury, fashion, interiors, even retreats.
We are all craving a little less noise.
Personally, one of the best feelings is coming home to a space that asks nothing of me. Somewhere calm, comfortable and considered, where I can properly switch off and rest.
And, as someone who has somehow left booking a summer holiday until this week, I can confirm that I may be very happily staycationing. The last-minute, eye-watering options are doing nothing for my nervous system, and I have a fairly firm rule that I only want to holiday somewhere nicer than home. So there may genuinely be no place like it!! I even have the red glittery slippers!
That same sense of quiet was central to The Whiteley.
The plasterwork, specialist finishes, bespoke joinery, metalwork, upholstery, lighting and window dressings were all developed with incredibly skilled makers who brought their own experience and judgement to the project.
Good craftsmanship is often quiet.
You may not immediately know why a detail feels right, but you feel the balance, the proportion and the care behind it.
I am enormously grateful to the craftspeople, suppliers, contractors and studio team who helped us bring this home to life. A project of this scale is never the work of one person.
Have a great week. I hope you can find some calm and quiet!
The Whiteley is currently shortlisted for two SBID International Design Awards.
Voting is open until 5pm on Friday 4 September via the link in my bio.
