Brown had a difficult decade. Beige took over, then grey took over from beige, and chocolate got left out in the cold somewhere around 2015. It’s back properly now, in murals like the one above, in grasscloth and woven texture, in old-fashioned damask gone moody and rich. The colour works because it’s warm rather than heavy, closer to coffee or cocoa than the flat “chocolate brown” of a school uniform. Pair it with brass, or a pale marble, or just let it fill a room on its own and watch what happens to the light in there by evening. Samples are worth ordering, this is a colour that shifts a good deal between a phone screen and a wall. Now at Wallpaper Sales.

Morris & Co didn't design anything new here, they just went back through their own archive and found the colours that never made it to production. Willow Boughs turns a bathroom into something moodier than the usual airy blue, Pimpernel settles a library into deep bookish green instead of its original warm gold, and Blackthorn in Indigo makes a vanity look like a jewel box.
Same historic surface printing at the same British factory, just a different mood on the wall.

Lewis & Wood still prints everything in-house at a mill near Stroud, the same way they have since 1993.

Every pattern starts as an old embroidery, an archive find or a piece of folk art, reworked rather than copied, and their wallpapers run wide-width, wider rolls than most, which means fewer seams up a wall.

In 1993, a young Cath Kidston opened one shop in Holland Park with no grand plan. The new AW26 collection still works from the same unhurried instinct.

Ditsy cornflowers, ticking stripes, a butterfly floral that borders on chinoiserie, and one genuinely brilliant fairytale print (winged unicorns, tiny castles, a rainbow) for a child's room that refuses to be twee about it.

Six new Zinc Textile fabrics landed on the site this week, and they've brought a proper 1970s cocktail hour with them. Zinc's whole identity is built on that decade, tactile and a little seductive, never precious about it. Bouclé, checkerboard chenille, a velvet bolster you want to sink straight into. Sen no Rikyu spent the sixteenth century making an unusual argument: that a chipped bowl could be more beautiful than a flawless one. Four hundred years on, that same idea has landed on the wall.
Wabi-sabi asks for pattern that never repeats in exactly the same way, texture that shifts with the light, materials that get more interesting with age rather than staying static. We think it holds up remarkably well as an argument for how to choose wallpaper, not just teacups.

Worth saving for the next time someone tells you a room has to be flawless to work.

Wabi-sabi says the most interesting rooms are never perfect. Hand dyed pattern that never repeats exactly, grasscloth that gets more textured with age, materials left to behave naturally instead of staying flawless. That’s the whole idea, on a wall.
