Ferae Naturae

Ferae Naturae Dorset Artist specializing in seascapes and skyscapes. I also create whimsical animal sculptures from cold porcelain clay.

Christina studied and gained a ND in Natural History Illustration at Bournemouth and Poole Art College, after which she designed and decorated cakes for businesses such as British Home Stores. Having always been drawn to the Wild Flowers of her home county of Dorset she felt connected to the small, roadside and meadow flowers which seemed to have become forgotten. She began to sculpt these flowers

from various clays, eventually making Cold Porcelain her chosen media, due to being able to create such fine details with the Cold Porcelain. Recently, Christina has found a unique backdrop for the flowers by using natural Purbeck Stone and Slate. Christina wants to bring the beautiful, forgotten wild flowers (which many of our well known garden flowers originate from) to peoples' attention and allow them to be appreciated again as they once were.

This new bas relief Kingfisher has been such a special piece to create. Although it may look flat in the photos, it is in fact fully 3D, with raised textures and layers that catch the light beautifully in person.

For me, the Kingfisher has always been a sign from my Dad, who passed 11 years ago. It was his favourite bird, and every time I see that bright blue flash along the river here in Wimborne, my heart lifts and I feel close to him again.

This piece is part of my ongoing ‘Signs from Spirit’ series and will be available soon in my Etsy shop. It will also be on display during my Dorset Arts Week exhibition, where it can be seen and experienced in real life.

I have begun a new series of small acrylic ink paintings based on the signs from nature that accompanied me through a difficult childhood. This 6 x 8 inch piece includes the seagull I used to call Swoopy. Even now, painting him brings back the feeling that I was not alone. I would love to hear what small signs have appeared in your own life when you most needed reassurance.

“Sweet Encounter”

An original bas relief acrylic painting capturing a quiet moment of connection in the meadow. The raised textures bring the hare gently forward from the grasses, so the light shifts across the surface throughout the day.

There is something tender and watchful in this little meeting of eyes, as if you have just paused and the hare has paused too.

The First Light – Imbolc

I’m very happy to share my latest bas-relief painting, The First Light – Imbolc, which will be on display at The Shaftesbury Arts Centre as part of their Spring Festival from 4th–21st February.

This piece has been crafted using cold porcelain clay, modelling clay and acrylic paint on a gesso cradle canvas. It is inspired by Imbolc, the ancient Pagan festival that marks the gentle turning of the year – a time of renewal, returning light, and the first stirrings of life beneath the soil. Traditionally celebrated at the beginning of February, Imbolc honours hope, rebirth, and the quiet promise of spring even while winter still holds its grip.

Snowdrops feature prominently in this work, as they are one of my most beloved flowers. They always remind me of my Mother, whose birthday was on 1st February, right at the heart of Imbolc. To me, the snowdrop is a symbol of quiet resilience – so delicate in appearance, yet strong and determined enough to bloom during one of the coldest times of the year. In many ways, this reflects my Mother’s own strength of character and unwavering determination.

This painting is both a celebration of the season and a personal offering – a reflection on light returning, love enduring, and the deep courage found in gentleness.

More details about the festival can be found via The Shaftesbury Arts Centre.

I’m very happy to share a new original acrylic painting with you.'The Threshold'

This piece is inspired by those quiet, in-between moments walking at Durlston Country Park as I have done since I was very small. I was drawn to the feeling of standing at the edge of something vast, where land, sea, and sky meet and emotions seem to surface just as strongly as the tide.

• 10 x 12 inches
• Painted on a gesso cradle canvas
• Ready to hang

This work will be appearing on the Artgallery SW website very soon, and I’ll share the link as soon as it’s live.

Thank you, as always, for supporting my work and for walking these landscapes with me — both the outer ones and the inner ones.

A little piece of good news I’m excited to share…

A selection of my artwork is now available to buy online through Art Gallery SW — a beautiful independent gallery that supports artists from the South West and beyond. New pieces will be added every day.

You can now browse and purchase some of my pieces directly via their website:
www.artgallerysw.co.uk

This feels like such a meaningful step for me — my work finding its way into new homes, new spaces, and new stories. Each piece I make is created slowly and with care, inspired by nature, light, and the quiet emotional landscapes we all carry within us.

If you’ve ever felt drawn to one of my paintings, this is a lovely way to connect with the work — and to support both an independent gallery and a local artist at the same time.

Thank you, as always, for walking this creative path with me 🤍
It truly means more than I can ever put into words.

“A Soft Place To Land” was created as a quiet offering for this turning of the wheel—a moment of stillness as the year exhales and the light slowly begins to return.

The Barn Owl has long been a companion of winter wisdom. She moves silently through the dark, seeing what others cannot, reminding us that rest, intuition, and gentleness are not weaknesses—but deep strengths.
May this season wrap you in softness.
May you rest without guilt.
May you trust that light is already on its way.

A very merry Yule to you!
