Oval Flowers Embroidery Retreat – Stitching, Creativity & Friendship
We’re looking back at a wonderful few days at our Oval Flowers Embroidery Retreat, held from 28th September to 2nd October 2026 at the beautiful Oblate Retreat Centre, Wistaston Hall.
With 16 lovely attendees joining us, the retreat was filled with creativity, inspiration, friendship and, of course, plenty of embroidery!
It was a joy to see everyone working on their projects, exploring their stitching and bringing their own individual flair to each piece. There’s something truly special about coming together with fellow embroiderers, sharing ideas, learning new skills and enjoying precious time dedicated to our love of needle and thread.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing the beautiful work created by our attendees, celebrating their individual interpretations, exquisite details and the wonderful variety of stitching that makes each project unique, Today we are sharing piece of work being stitched by Caroline, who was stitching her own design which will be a turtle, the planning, the prep and the experimenting (as shown) of design ideas took time but will ensure that the finished piece is perfect . Well done Caroline you worked really hard and we can wait to see the finished piece.

Felt might not be the first thing you think of when planning a goldwork project, but it’s one of those essential materials that can make a real difference to your finished piece! ✨
So, what is felt used for in goldwork?
🧵 RAISED PADDING – Felt is used beneath goldwork threads and wires to create raised shapes and give your embroidery extra depth and dimension.
✨ BEAUTIFUL TEXTURE – It helps you build up areas of your design, creating a lovely three-dimensional effect that catches the light.

Choosing a– Did you know the colour of your padding can matter, too? Yellow felt is traditionally used beneath gold threads, white beneath silver, and sand beneath copper, helping the padding blend with the metalwork.
Whether you’re working on delicate details or creating bold, raised shapes, felt is a handy addition to your goldwork toolkit!
