🔥 Homemade Pine Cone Firelighters
A simple way to turn dried pine cones into natural firelighters for your stove or open fire.
You’ll need
* Completely dry pine cones
* Old candle ends or paraffin/soy wax
* Cotton string or natural twine
* An old saucepan or heatproof jug
* A larger pan for a double boiler
* Baking paper
Method
1. Dry the pine cones
Make sure your pine cones are completely dry. If freshly collected, leave them somewhere warm and dry until the scales have opened.
2. Add the wick
Tie a length of cotton string around the base of each pine cone, leaving a small piece sticking out to act as a wick.
3. Melt the wax
Gently melt your wax using a double boiler. Never melt wax directly over a flame.
4. Dip the pine cones
Holding the string, carefully dip each pine cone into the melted wax. Allow the excess to drip off.
For longer-burning firelighters, let the first coat set for a minute or two and then dip them for a second time.
5. Leave to set
Place on baking paper and allow the wax to cool and harden completely.
To use
Place one pine cone firelighter amongst your kindling and light the cotton wick. Build your fire above it, allowing plenty of airflow.
🌲 Optional extras
For a lovely autumn/winter feel, you can add a little dried rosemary, cinnamon stick or dried orange peel around the twine before dipping.
Storage
Keep in a cool, dry place away from heat and naked flames, ideally in a metal tin or other suitable container.
Important: Only use clean, natural pine cones. Avoid painted, glittered or chemically treated cones. These are intended for lighting wood fires, not as a substitute for suitable dry kindling.
